'Curb Your Enthusiasm' actor Jeff Garlin arrested

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Los Angeles police say "Curb Your Enthusiasm" actor and comedian Jeff Garlin has been arrested on a felony vandalism charge after a dispute with another motorist over a parking space.

Police Sgt. Harry Rosenfeld says the 51-year-old actor was arrested for allegedly smashing the windows of the other person's car. Rosenfeld says officers arrested Garlin in Studio City on Saturday.

Garlin was jailed on $20,000 bail. It wasn't clear from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's website if he had been released. Garlin's publicists didn't immediately respond to phone and email messages Sunday.

Garlin played Larry David's friend and manager on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and was the show's co-executive producer. He's also appeared frequently on "Arrested Development" and numerous other television shows.

TMZ first reported his arrest.

Under par becomes revolving door at US Open

ARDMORE, Pa. (AP) ? Short birdie putts were a big deal for Charl Schwartzel and Luke Donald at the 10th hole in the third round at the U.S. Open.

When Schwartzel made his 4-footer Saturday, he became the first player all day to get to 2 under in a tournament where the top of the leaderboard was in constant flux.

Minutes later, Donald reached the same score by converting an even shorter putt at the same hole, a 280-yard par 4 that offered one of the few reliable birdie chances on the tough and tight little course.

The names at the top kept changing. Phil Mickelson and Billy Horschel began the round with a share of first place at 1 under, a score that was as precious as a small piece of shade on a hot day at the club. Soon they were gone, replaced by John Senden and Justin Rose. Then along came Donald to make it a trio.

A few minutes later, 2011 Masters champion Schwartzel was there all by himself with a birdie at No. 7. Donald rejoined him with a birdie at No. 8.

There was also a lot of noise coming from a group farther ahead on the back nine. Nineteen-year-old amateur Michael Kim made four birdies in a six-hole stretch, capped by a 15-foot putt at No. 15 that lowered his score to even par.

Kim, the Jack Nicklaus Award winner as the nation's top collegiate golfer, bogeyed his next two holes, but his score was far better than that of, say, Tiger Woods, who was a 7 over midway through the back nine, in danger of extending his five-year drought without a major championship.

Sunshine was baking a course that had been soaked by heavy rain for a week. The sloping greens were faster and tougher to read. Any putt beyond 15 feet became an adventure, and many closer ones were far from gimmies. Typical of the day: Horschel leaning back in disbelief after missing a 7-foot par putt at No. 5, his expression as colorful as his horizontal-striped shirt.

It became clear that a runaway round to establish a clear leader was unlikely. Quite the contrary. Many scores were running in the opposite direction.

Woods bogeyed three of his first six holes, putting the ball all over the place. He made a nice arcing 15-footer for birdie at No. 1 but missed an 8-footer for par at No. 3. He kept having to bail himself out from tee shots that landed in the rough, although at least he was showing no obvious problems with the left elbow that's been bothering him this week.

Rory McIlroy was faring even worse, with five bogeys on the front nine.

Mickelson and Horschel shared the lead at 1 under after the second round was completed earlier Saturday. In the third round, Horschel saved par at No. 2 by making a putt from the fringe on a hole that ended a remarkable streak of accuracy. Horschel didn't miss a green in regulation during the second round, but his trouble at the 2nd included a hook that went so far left that he had to stand a few feet behind a water cooler to make his next shot.

Neither Mickelson and Horschel could get a handle on the 245-yard par-3 third, Horschel finding the bunker and Mickelson the greenside rough. Both 2-putted for bogey to fall back to even par.

Mickelson bogeyed No. 5 as well, but he later joined the parade of golfers making birdie at No. 10 and picked up a shot at the 11th to get back under par, one shot off the lead.

The average score through two rounds on the par-70 course was 74.7. The cut line was 8 over, saving both defending champion Webb Simpson (5 over) and Masters champion Adam Scott (7 over) and keeping alive, albeit faintly, hopes for a Grand Slam. The third round was played in threesomes teeing off at Nos. 1 and 11 in a tournament that fell behind schedule when storms moved through the Philadelphia area on Thursday.

Smart lighting market set to boom

According to VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the lighting systems of the future could be multi-purpose devices not dissimilar to smart phones. In the future, lighting will not just allow us to see but could also be used to survey surroundings, transmit information, reflect moods and make our lives more comfortable. Smart lighting could also save as much as 80 per cent of energy compared to traditional lighting solutions. As more applications become available, the smart lighting industry will also be revolutionised. In addition to lighting, businesses could soon begin to offer their customers smart applications and comprehensive service concepts.

The smart lighting industry is undergoing a major transition. Different kinds of smart lighting solutions are expected to become increasingly popular in homes, public buildings and offices.

In the future, smart lighting technology will enable the direction, power and colour of lighting to be adjusted automatically according to whether a room is being used for watching television or eating dinner and according to where people are in the room. Lights positioned near windows will change colour according to outdoor temperature. Wall-mounted light switches will detect when a person enters the room. New smart features for light fittings will be available to download from the internet. In office buildings, smart lighting technology will help shift-workers to adapt to changes in their circadian rhythm.

"Smart lighting systems are becoming increasingly popular in both new builds and renovation projects. Technologically speaking, the next major step will be to integrate better sensors and new functions into lighting systems, which will allow the occupants of a room to adjust lighting with increasing accuracy and flexibility according to their movements and activities", explains VTT's Principal Scientist Janne Aikio.

The first-generation smart lighting systems that are currently available on the market are mostly designed for commercial use, and they include features such as integrability with building automation systems. In ten years' time, user-friendly and affordable lighting systems could become everyday consumer goods. More and more wireless lighting systems that can be controlled via devices such as a mobile telephone are becoming available.

Smart lighting to revolutionise business models

Maturing technology and growing demand are revolutionising the lighting industry. In addition to lighting, businesses could soon begin to offer their customers smart applications and comprehensive service concepts.

Integrated information technology and electronics are becoming more and more common in products, which can now "talk" to each other and share information. The Internet of Things is transforming not just the daily lives of consumers but also many business sectors.

"Forecasts suggest that smart lighting will become one of the key trends in the context of the Internet of Things. It is important that we identify new applications for this technology now and begin to build new business around them. The smart lighting market also has room and opportunities for SMEs," says VTT's Research Professor Heikki Ailisto.

Demand for smart lighting is expected to boom over the next ten years. The market volume is estimated to be as much as EUR 7.7 billion in 2020, when the similar figure in 2011 was EUR 1.8 billion.

Smart lighting also has substantial energy-saving potential. When the required amount of light can be regulated more accurately using energy-efficient LEDs, as much as 80 per cent of the energy required for lighting could be saved. Lighting currently accounts for approximately one fifth of the world's electricity consumption.

98% Before Midnight

All Critics (96) | Top Critics (34) | Fresh (93) | Rotten (2)

Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.

How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.

Having created and aged into their characters, both Delpy and Hawke are superb at doing what professional actors find so difficult - not seeming to act.

Offers a remarkably intimate and provocative study of a marriage.

Lovely. Insightful. Sad. Funny.

If the first two films belong with the greatest (if talkiest) movie romances of all time, the new film is richer, riskier, and more bleakly perceptive about what it takes for love to endure (or not) over the long haul.

A fictional, romantic version of the British "Up" series and a unique collaboration between actors and director.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy shine in what has to be the most genuine, brutally honest, and romantic tale of love in all of film history. Linklater has made a crowning achievement!

The problem I have...is that the actors are so comfortable in their roles, the cease to be real.

Not since the 1950s, and movies such as The Best Years of Our Lives, have we seen such an adult treatment of long-term relationships in American cinema, all of which makes Before Midnight as refreshing as it is smart, and as bold as love itself.

From moment to moment, the concerns of this frank and funny movie seem small, but the subject proves to be love, the biggest one of all.

The conclusion of a trilogy that...has subtly depicted the birth, growth and maturation of a man-woman relationship with its inevitable vacillations between affection, sacrifice, self-concern and acrimony.

Linklater makes use of unshowy direction and natural improvisation from his leads, who both get co-writing credits, creating a remarkably unforced picture of love kindled and rekindled.

It's not that Delpy and Hawke don't have the chemistry, they're terrific together, but their overemphatic ways feel false in a film that's endeavoring for realism.

Implacable and illusory, contingent on bodies and beliefs, time moves for the characters in Before Midnight, and maybe more importantly it moves for you, too.

...a bright, good-humored, and painfully combative love story that stings more than it soothes.

It's hard to remember another film where the ache of life's passing, and the ghostly memory of youthful freedoms has been more piercingly evoked.

...the sense of intimacy and urgency that was so palpable in the earlier films is lessened here.
