Flame virus: a cyberweapon or gamers' prank?

This undated screen grab released by the Kaspersky Lab site shows code from the computer virus known as Flame.

By Bob Sullivan

Why would super-secret spy software be written in a video game language?? As security researchers continue to unpack the digital mystery that is the Flame virus, that's just one question looming over perhaps the world's most intriguing digital whodunit.

With all the talk about Flame being the most powerful, ingenious and stealthy computer virus ever written, some properties of the mysterious malicious software are causing confusion.

For one thing, the program takes up 20 megabytes of space on infected machines. That's not stealthy; large files usually indicate sloppy programming. Also, unlike Stuxnet, Flame didn't come with precision targeting, and hasn't yet been credited with doing anything as impressive as hacking nuclear power plant computers. But perhaps most mysterious of all: Part of Flame?s code was written in the Lua programming language, a simple language used almost exclusively by video game programmers.? Why would a nation-state trying to commit secret espionage toy with video game software?

"This is not a stealth operation," said Marcus Carey, who worked as?a security analyst at the National Security Agency for eight years before joining the security firm Rapid7 in Boston.

News of the Flame virus hit Monday, as multiple computer security firms claimed the program represented a huge escalation in cyberwarfare. Moscow-based Kaspersky Labs, among the first to analyze the virus, called it the most powerful malicious program ever.

?The complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date,? it said.

Flame reportedly comes loaded with lots of capabilities, such as remotely turning on victims' PC microphones, but it's hardly the first virus to accomplish that.? And unlike Stuxnet, it's yet clear that?Flame used a series of so-called 0-day exploits -- ?vulnerabilities in software that are undiscovered by the security industry and for which there are no antidotes.? While initial reports immediately linked Stuxnet to Flame, primarily because they both seem to target Iran, skepticism is beginning to build that the two are directly linked.

That's partly because the two programs were written in very different ways. Flame?s authors used Lua, something that confuses observers.

"Lua in a spy tool is just ... weird," said one Israeli programmer who uses Lua and requested anonymity. "The little snippet I've seen of the code seems so ... ordinary ... really like the work of your average programmer.? Stuxnet sounded genius.?

Said another: "Lua is considered a kids language.... All I see around that is built with Lua are games. I mean, the syntax is very simple."

Not exactly the stuff of high-tech international espionage. Or is it?

Lua has been around since the 1980s, developed at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It was created out of necessity; at the time, trade barriers made importing software development tools too expensive.? Development of Lua as a programming language remains centered in Brazil, where a small group of programmers make infrequent updates to the language.? But it's become a favorite platform for a few thousand devotees around the world, who are attracted to its simplicity, its ability to play well with other software and its tiny footprint, which makes it ideal for use on embedded devices or games, where memory and space are at a premium.

Unlike other programming languages that grow in size out of necessity over ?time, Lua has actually shrunken in recent years, as developers have revised and refined its architecture.

Its name ? Portuguese for ?moon? ? hints at Lua?s use as a subordinate language to attach satellite projects to larger pieces of software.

At the Lua-L discussion list, Flame talk was all the rage on Monday, as its users? small corner of the technology world was suddenly thrust into the limelight.

"In some morbid way this is an endorsement for Lua," wrote a poster identified as Enrico Colombini.? "Though I'm a bit perplexed about the alleged high sophistication of that malware, when I see unobfuscated Lua with self-descriptive names."

But longtime Lua programmer Erik Hougaard, based in Denmark, said such opinions show a fundamental misunderstanding of Lua's simple elegance as a programming tool.

"It's a well-kept secret, but it's everywhere. It's hard to pick up an Xbox game without it," said Hougaard, who now uses Lua to program robots but has also used it to create from-scratch accounting software and other financial tools at EFoqus Danmark A/S.? "It's not sexy, but it's unique. It's so small you can fit it onto a single chip."

That's essential, because Lua includes both program and programming language in one tidy package -- meaning programs written in Lua will run reliably on machines as diverse as PCs and iPhones.?

"Lua is quite common in the mobile application space. If someone has Angry Birds installed on their iPhone, they are using Lua," said Carey, the security analyst. In fact, thousands of iPhone apps are written with Lua, he said.

Hackers have taken notice. While security firms have said they can't think of another computer virus before Flame that used Lua, it is a fundamental part of a favorite hacker tool called "NMAP." NMAP is used to scan the Internet for computers with potentially exploitable vulnerabilities; it?s the first tool used by hackers looking for trouble, and by security professionals looking to plug holes. NMAP permits use of a scripting language that runs under Lua so hackers can adjust the tool as needed.

"People have been using Lua to hack networks for a while, so this shouldn't surprise anyone," Carey said.? "Attackers are just using what works."

Lua first came to hackers' attention about two or three years ago, roughly when some analysts believe Flame was written, Carey said.

As with most information about Flame, Lua's appearance in the virus can be interpreted in two ways:

  • Flame's writers may have been ahead of their time, using a unique programming language to create their cybermonster, and further confuse computer security professionals.
  • Or, Flame's writers may have been video gamers and relative amateurs who didn't bother to do much to cover their tracks.

Symantec Corp. believes the use of Lua supports the former theory. It?s one of many security firms calling Flame one?of the most powerful and complex virus ever written.

"Lua is scriptable, easy to understand, and easy to update. That said, it?s not used often," said Vikram Thakur, principal security manager at Symantec Security Response. "Anecdotally, we can?t think of another threat that is written in Lua..... The usage of the programming language is what makes the program, independent of the language, interesting."

But is it the work of genius, and a sign that cyberwar has escalated a new and dangerous level? Carey is not so sure.

"Saying this is the work of a nation-state is premature," he said. "This is not a particularly clever piece of malware or uber-elite." And despite the fact that it apparently operated in stealth for at least two years, many experts say it is too big to have been conceived as a spy tool.

"What's with the size?" said the anonymous Israeli Lua programmer. "It's like the trick they do in the movies of making a scene on the train/plane? to create a diversion while committing a crime.?

Colombini was even more direct in his assessment.

"I find it difficult to believe this to be the work of an intelligence service, at least of a decent one,? he said. ?Obfuscating ? the Lua code would have made analysis more difficult and above all slower. In the spying business gaining time has a very high value. ? No self-respecting intelligence service (would have neglected to do that)." ?

So far, most of the roughly 300 confirmed Flame infections have been in Middle Eastern countries that are natural enemies of Israel, including 189 in Iran, according to Kaspersky Lab. ?

?If it weren't for the peculiar geographical distribution, (which is) the only thing that makes one think of politically charged malware, I'd think of a sort of malware construction kit,? designed to simply collect a large series of attack tools in one place, Colombini said.? ?

Given that the subject is covert cyberwar, confusion, half-truths and disinformation are the rule rather than the exception. Already, an unnamed U.S. official has told NBC News that the U.S. government is probably responsible for it; while Israeli officials have hinted that their side developed it.

Something else concerns Carey about the way that the Flame narrative has progressed so far.? Much of what we know about Flame has come directly from Iran's Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center.

?"Generally, we don't believe anything Iran says. Here, we seem to be believing everything they say," he said. "But this incident reinforces a storyline for Iran playing the victim."

Symantec, and many other security organizations, have said the sheer size of Flame is making thorough analysis of the virus a slog. Early reports on the malicious program all came with warnings that findings were preliminary.? Symantec expects to issue a follow-up later this week.

Clock Ticks On China-Japan Islands Dispute | Battleland | TIME.com

Japan has one year, maybe two, to resolve the ownership dispute over a tiny group of islands or risk an honest-to-goodness shooting war with China.? Unfortunately, neither Japan?s diplomats nor public seem to realize the danger, says a leading expert on the territorial disputes plaguing America?s closest Asian ally.

?We have drifted to a place where we don?t want to be and we are running out of time,? says Kazuhiko Togo, director of the Institute for World Affairs at Kyoto Sangyo University. ?We need to prepare ourselves militarily, and at the same time make every diplomatic effort to bridge the gap between Tokyo and Beijing. This really is becoming a?casus belli.?

Clock Ticks On China-Japan Islands Dispute | Battleland | TIME.com

Given China?s South China Sea conflicts with the Philippines and Vietnam, and its conflict with Japan, it seems like a good bet that China will enter into a direct military conflict with one of them. And it might happen between now and a few years from now. It also seems like there is a reasonable chance that the US could get sucked into one of these conflicts.

The California Grilled Cheese with Avocados

Cheese. I?ve been in love with cheese all my life. When I was a wee tot, living in Iran, every morning I ate my lavash (flat bread), feta and jam. This was all the cheese I knew. Things changed when we came to the U.S. and moved to Texas. I became one of many elementary school kids who took my lunch to school everyday. It was always a sandwich. And the cheese was always Kraft Singles.

My mom would pack my lunch every morning, until I fired her. I took over the sandwich-making in my family early on, even making some for my brother. It was simple in the beginning, Two layers of meat with some Kraft American cheese in between. When I was allowed to wield a knife, I learned to cut little green olives in half and I would line the entire side of my mayo-laden white bread with them. Yes, I said white bread. <Gasp!>?Whole wheat? Never heard of ?fiber? when I was growing up.

Grilled cheese sandwiches were even simpler back then: bread, mayo, cheese. Done.

As I got older, the sandwiches got more complicated. I discovered hoagie rolls. I would fold my meat to add height to my sandwiches, like at the deli. Then lettuce, tomatoes and some Italian salad dressing would be added to the mix. But one thing would never change: I always had my Kraft American cheese.

Quite frankly, I didn?t know other cheeses existed! It wasn?t until college that the world of cheese truly opened up to me, and I dove in ? head first. But, in my apartment, despite all the choices, there was always a pack of Kraft singles in the fridge. Honest truth. I attended the University of Arizona, in Tucson. And it got hot there, real hot. After biking home from class, I?d cool off with a large glass of ice water, and my favorite comfort food: two slices of bread with mayo and my cheese. I suppose it was the anti-grilled cheese, to combat the triple-digit weather I was living in. But it always hit the spot.

Now that I have kids, I tend to over-compensate with their lunches. I have made many different varieties of gourmet sandwiches, but my kids weren?t big on them. They prefer meat rolls with cheese slices and fruit. Definitely a healthier alternative than what I had growing up!

A favorite after-school snack in our house is cheese with whole-grain crackers or apples.

And the grilled cheese has evolved with the times, too. Whole grain wheat bread (high in fiber, course) has replaced the white bread. I also like to add a some sweet summer tomatoes or creamy avocados. I?ve even been known to throw some pepperoni slices in there, too. To make them healthier, I toast the bread with the cheese in the toaster oven. No greasy fingers, less fat, but still gooey.

I call it the California Toasted Cheese Sandwich. You find the full recipe here.

What is your favorite cheesy memory?

Disclosure: As part of the DailyBuzz Moms Featured Publisher Community, I received a coupon for free Kraft Singles and a stipend. The memories I have described are all true, and the opinions are truly mine. How can you not like cheese?!

Humanoid robot works side by side with people

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? The first robots reached the world of industry over 60 years ago. Since then, for security reasons, they have performed their work isolated in cages, and that prevented collaboration between workers and machines. The research centre Tecnalia Research & Innovation is embarking on a new era by incorporating into European industry the first robot capable of working shoulder to shoulder with people. There are two aims: to improve the capacities of the workers in conditions of safety; and to increase the competitiveness of the factories in international markets. For this it has the robot Hiro, Japan's most closely guarded secret in recent years in the sphere of industrial robotics.

Assisted by Tecnalia, the robot Hiro has made its first trip outside Japan. For years, Japan, the leader in industrial robotics, has been developing this technology while regarding it as "protected national heritage" which it did not share beyond its frontiers. But now it has placed its trust in Tecnalia, so that Hiro can be adapted and join companies worldwide, starting with Europe.

Through Hiro, Tecnalia is aiming to ensure worker safety, increase the capacities of European manufacturing plants, and fight off the competition existing in international markets. So it has committed itself to combining the intelligence of the human being with the characteristics of industrial robots, since 99% of the tasks are more efficient if the two are combined. What is new about Hiro is that it is a social robot, in other words, it is built to share working space with people in conditions of absolute safety, and should it come into physical contact with any human being, it is programmed to stop automatically. It should be added that robots will undertake to carry out tasks that could signify a health hazard for the workers, and that way staff safety can be guaranteed to a maximum.

It is reckoned that within six years 60% of the industrial base state-wide that performs final product assembly work will have this type of robot on its production lines. The sectors set to benefit from this new technology will be the automotive, auxiliary, plastics, food, timber, beverages, agricultural, aeronautical, railway and energy ones, among others.

The robot inside and outside

The robot Hiro, developed by Kawada Industries, has a humanoid appearance in its upper part and a robot's body below. According to the Japanese philosophy, equipping robots with a human appearance encourages their entry into the labour environment and their interaction with the workers. That is why the upper part has a head, a trunk and two extremities ending in the form of a hand. It also has a total of four eyes, two on the face and one on each hand, to help it perform tasks that are uncomfortable or hazardous for human beings. But underneath it has a mechanism with wheels to enable it to move around, a more operational solution as it is a robot designed for industry.

Tecnalia is developing the robot's intelligence in order to adapt it to industry, so that it can carry out different actions in a range of scenarios depending on the needs of each factory and each client. It is about addressing the real needs of industry. For this purpose, Tecnalia was able to rely on the experience and industrial vision of the aircraft manufacturer AIRBUS, one of its strategic clients. Both companies went to Japan where they were able to analyse together the capacity of this robot to respond to the real needs of industry.

Why Pakistan still hasn't reopened NATO supply lines

The government of Pakistan is facing domestic political pressure to keep NATO's supply routes to Afghanistan closed, while the US resists apologizing or paying a high per truck fee.

By Mahvish Ahmad,?Correspondent / May 20, 2012

After receiving a last-minute invite to today's NATO summit in Chicago, Pakistan still has not come to a deal with the US to reopen supply lines for the Afghan war.?

"We are close to a solution, but still have some way to go," says Fawad Chaudhury, the spokesperson for Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

The closed route has been a bone of contention between the US and Pakistan ever since NATO forces attacked two military checkpoints in Salala, along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers and injuring an additional 13. In response to the attack, the Pakistanis shut down the supply routes running through their territory, forcing NATO to use air transport and ground routes through Central Asia instead.

In the run-up to today's Chicago summit, the Pakistani government has faced countervailing pressures, with NATO and Washington pushing Pakistan to reopen the supply lines, and domestic opposition parties pushing to keep them closed.?A gradual democratization of Pakistan's foreign policy ??once the preserve of the military ??has added many voices across the political?spectrum into the debate over the NATO supply routes.

Parliament wants its say

On April 12 the Pakistani parliament passed a 14-point resolution in response to the Salala checkpoint attacks. The resolution condemns the attacks, and includes demands for an unconditional apology from the US, an immediate cessation of drone attacks, and a stop to all transport of arms and ammunition through Pakistan.?

The foreign policy review process was an attempt by the parliament to regain control over the country's foreign policy, which has historically been set by the country's military. It was passed after several months debate, and under a broad coalition of parties across the political spectrum.

?We need to make sure that we follow the recommendations of the parliament in our negotiations with the US. I am hopeful that we can come to a mutually satisfying agreement,? says Mr. Chaudhury.

US not budging on apology

The US, however, does not seem to be budging on the question of an apology. ?We have expressed our deepest condolences on this event, and are working hard to ensure that this event does not happen again,? says the spokesperson for the US State Department in Islamabad, Mark Stroh.?

The unlikelihood that some of the core demands of the resolution will be met, has given opposition parties ? especially those critical of US foreign policy ? ammunition against the current negotiations.

?We believe that Pakistan has suffered enormously because of this so-called war against terror. That is why we are calling for an end to the partnership. We do not want to see any NATO supply routes reopened, because we believe that is equal to aiding the US war effort in Afghanistan.?We will only reopen them, if it facilitates the withdrawal of foreign troops from our region,? says Shafqat Mehmood, the spokesperson for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI). The party is led by the former cricket star-turned-politician, Imran Khan, who has earned political points on his criticism of US foreign policy.

Raza Rumi, director of the Islamabad-based Jinnah Institute, says?public sentiment is a reflection of an irrational and impractical approach to the country's foreign policy and national interest.

Discovery Communications Discovers the Meaning of Like

The future of TV is much more than social, it?s a multi-screen experience that takes design. Often, producers, broadcast and movie marketers and brands alike underestimate the role social media plays as consumers watch, share, and interact. Whether its watching movies, TV shows or listening to music, consumers will have at least one-to-two other devices in grasp or within reach. Depending on the device, each screen is used differently and with purpose. As a result, each screen requires the thoughtful development of an engaging or entertaining experience.

This is a topic that I have and will continue to explore. I believe the entertainment industry is uniquely positioned to introduce a connected, cross-platform experience layer that captivates and grows audiences while creating new opportunities for monetization.

In addition to sharing my thoughts, I will also feature the work of others who are experimenting beyond what we think we know to learn and share just what?s possible. I invited Gayle Weiswasser VP, Social Media Discovery Communications, to stop by for an in-depth interview. Here, she shares how her team is building a new infrastructure to unite programming, audiences, and talent to change how Discovery creates, markets, and supports new experiences.

What is the prevailing mission and purpose for Discovery?s social media strategy?

At Discovery, social media represents an individual, intimate touchpoint with our audiences. Our social accounts allow us to interact with fans in a manner that was previously impossible for large broadcasters: two-way, real-time conversation around our programming and talent. Our mission is to augment our fans? experience with our networks through relevant content, access to talent, exclusives and other interactions that celebrate our fans and shine a spotlight on their passions.

We use social media primarily for four purposes: 1) engaging with fans and encouraging that two-way conversation; 2) driving tune-in to our programming; 3) driving traffic to our owned-and-operated fansites; and 4) gathering insights about fan preferences and reactions that we can share internally with our network marketing, communications and production partners.

What is the current size of the communities you manage and what has overall growth and size of your social media footprint evolved?

As of April 2012, we have 59 million likes across approximately 75 active Facebook pages; on Twitter, we have 3.5 million followers across 21 accounts. Our Facebook footprint grows by about two million likes a month, and in 2011, our fan counts on both platforms doubled. That growth has come almost entirely organically, with very few targeted spends or buys aimed at building our social audience.

How does strategy come to life in the organization?

Social media strategy is developed by a centralized team that works in lockstep with our communications, marketing, digital media and many other teams. It is truly a joint, multi-disciplinary effort. Our social media team works hard to ensure that each of our plans is executed in line with the other teams? strategies, and we engage in early cross-functional brainstorming and strategy meetings to ensure that we are maximizing the potential of social media to support network initiatives.

On average how many social media presences does Discovery host at any one time?

We currently have 75 active Facebook pages and 21 Twitter accounts (U.S. network and show-related), and also have several network Pinterest accounts. We?ve also done some experimentation on Tumblr and Google+, and work with several social TV players, like GetGlue, Miso and Viggle.

How do you distribute presences, for example, which shows get Facebook pages vs. Google + vs. Twitter vs. YouTube, etc.

For now, we?re focusing on where our largest and most engaged audiences are: Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Every network has a Facebook and Twitter account, and most of our popular programs have their own Facebook pages as well. We have a set of factors that we balance before launching a new social media account ? everything from whether the show has been greenlit for more than one season to how much related content we will have to share with fans year-round. Given our large social footprint, we are often able to support new series through network pages and cross promotion, which may give way to a new Facebook page as the audience builds.

What are some of the prime metrics that you use to define success?

Engagement metrics are the ones we focus on the most: are people reacting to, and being inspired by, our content? Are they liking, commenting, clicking, and sharing? Those are the numbers we?re most focused on, as they tell us whether we?re doing a good job of building that important relationship with our audiences. The footprint number is meaningless if we?re not actually connecting with those fans.

Are you using social media to drive tune-in and what are your observations on what?s possible here?

Yes, that?s one of our main goals for social media. We have a lot of anecdotal evidence that our social media activity ? particularly real-time activity around premieres ? drives buzz and, in turn, increases the likelihood that existing and new viewers will tune in. And, of course, we follow the social TV studies that have been published lately, such as Nielsen?s conclusion that pre-show social activity drives ratings increases and TVGuide.com?s report that people are watching more live TV to avoid spoilers. We think that there is a world of possibility here ? with at least 40-45% of people using smart devices/laptops while they are watching TV. This year, we will be doing more with live, on-air streaming of social integrations, which we expect will only strengthen the social media-tune-in connection.

How have you organized around social media to manage an extensive and engaged network?

We have a centralized social media team that acts as an in-house social media agency, with the networks as our clients. Within the team, we have members dedicated to each network, and they attend all of the network meetings that touch social media (marketing/communications/digital/production) so that they are entirely engaged in all of the network plans. The centralized structure allows the team to share best practices, do cross-network promotions, test emerging platforms, and develop social media guidelines that extend across networks.

Any special practices for internal coordination?
? Social CMS?
? Style Guide?
? Best practices?
? Training?

These types of practices are done within our centralized team, which is another benefit to the structure. We have a social media style guide, and we meet three times a week as a team to brainstorm and develop best practices.

How do you decide when it?s time to retire an account?

We retire accounts when we no longer have regular, relevant content to share with their audiences. This may happen when a show finishes its run, although we have several active social communities that are still going strong even though the shows they were built around are no longer in premieres. If we can?t provide the community with good content, then we will shut down the account, after ensuring that fans have notice and the opportunity to join similar social communities we manage, if available.

Any final advice, tips, or cautionary tales to leave us with as we put your experiences into action?

Don?t underfund or understaff your social media teams ? the purpose they serve is too important to give it short shrift. And be sure that your team isn?t silo-ed. The key to an effective social media strategy is integrating social across your business by keeping the lines of communication open.

Russia says West still considering military action on Iran

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's deputy foreign minister said on Sunday that military action against Iran over its nuclear program was being considered in some Western countries.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was speaking to reporters on a plane on his way back from the G8 summit in Camp David, where the G8 leaders signaled their readiness to tap into emergency oil stockpiles quickly this summer if tougher new sanctions on Iran threatened to strain supplies.

"It is one of many various signals coming from various sources that the military option is considered as realistic and possible," he said. "We are receiving signals, both through public and intelligence channels, that this option is now being reviewed in some capitals as more applicable in this situation".

"We are very worried about this. We do not want the region and the world to fall into...new divisions and bitter political arguments," he said.

Western countries suspect Iran's nuclear program is aimed at making a nuclear bomb, a charge Tehran denies.

A European Union embargo of Iranian crude takes effect in July and tough new U.S. sanctions come into force in late June. Iran's oil exports have fallen by more than a fifth this year.

Russia has adamantly urged Western nations not to attack Iran to neutralize its nuclear program, saying that threats would only encourage Tehran to develop such weapons.

Ryabkov dismissed suggestions that Russia, the world's biggest oil exporter, sought to keep tensions around Iran on the boil in order to benefit from higher global oil prices.

"It would be a simplification and possibly even a deliberate distortion of Moscow's position to believe that based on some wild, egoistic intentions, we want oil to cost $200 per barrel," Ryabkov said.

He said Russia wanted to keep oil prices stable at a level acceptable to consumers and suppliers. He said that any gains from the oil price spike would be short-lived.

A meeting between Iran and six world powers - Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France and Germany - is scheduled to take place in Baghdad on May 23.

Ryabkov said Russia had drafted a set of proposals for the Baghdad talks, saying negotiations needed to produce evidence of progress to the international community.

Proposals included suggested steps for Iran to restore international confidence as well as incentives on cooperation, said Ryabkov, adding that any followup round of talks should take place within weeks in order to maintain the momentum.

"Practical results are needed that can be shown to the international community as evidence that we are moving forward," Ryabkov said.

TENSIONS OVER SYRIA

Much like with Iran, Moscow has long urged Western powers not to intervene in Syria over bloodshed in which the United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed.

At a G8 summit in France in May 2011, Russia successfully managed to water down a statement on Syria removing calls for action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Ryabkov said that this time part of the G8 statement which concerns Syria, which called for a "political transition leading to a democratic plural political system", fully satisfied Russia.

"Anything that will be a product of the process of national reconciliation and dialogue will satisfy the Russian side. We are nobody's advocates in this process," he said.

Ryabkov said Assad's departure from power in a scenario similar to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who had been granted immunity from prosecution, was discussed at the G8 summit, but Russia opposed the idea.

21st Century Music Technology | Gareth Young

(This article is taken from the?forthcoming DAH?iBook).

?

As we travel through the technological epochs of the twenty-first century, musicians are curiously adapting the applied sciences to suit the needs of contemporary electronic music. As musicians in the twenty-first century are exposed to portentous computing power, the genre is always changing and mutating technology into somewhat antithetic applications. The technological advances we are making in various fields are being taken up by creative individuals to make music that is often unconventional, but progressive.

?

In the twentieth century, we saw a rapid spurt of technological advances in the applied sciences. It was at the dawn of this era that we first saw Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin take to the sky, and in a science lab somewhere in the world, the first radio was receiving messages through the aether. Over a period of only one hundred years we now fly through the air at thousands of kilometres per hour and almost every home on the planet has an old analogue radio receiver. So how has twenty-first century technology developed over the last decade and what does that mean for composers of modern, contemporary music?

?

As technological advances have progressed, so have the manners in which we produce sound and music. Throughout the twentieth century, we leaped through rapid accelerations in science, creating new musical instruments from this technology. The birth of electronic music took place, and electronic musical instruments took form from the output of engineering science labs. Engineering experts became composers and composers became sound scientists. Another fascinating change occurred as technology became musical. This was that ?noise? became art and electro-acoustics became entwined with the musical genre of old. It has been convincingly argued in literature how music technology has managed to shift human mental and physical orientations, encouraging the evolution of the industrious culture we live in today.

?

Changes in musical interaction follow closely the technological advances, but these are not the only issues that require addressing. There is also the philosophical changes that have occurred. With the omnipotent technology that we have in our homes, the musician is now very much a part of the conceptualisation as they are in the performance. Musicians are now composers and vice-versa. Whereas in the twenty-first century, a musician was expected to strictly follow the instructions of a composer and their interpretations of a score were seriously frowned upon. Improvisation and artistic expression have burst into modern musicality with both barrels blazing.

?

For many, sound is taken for granted. We are constantly bombarded with ?noise? from the moment we are born. Be it the steady beat of a heart monitor or the smack of a doctors hand, in our first moments of existence in this world, we are submerged in sound. Even before birth scientists believe that a developing child in the womb can recognise voices and music and that these combined can effect a child?s development from within. So as sound is all around us from the start it is no wonder that we strive to control its production with the modern tools we are given as we grow. Think back to when you were a child, were you given a pseudo-musical instrument early on?

?

What about the younger generation?s toys today? Technology is very much a part of early life and it is no wonder that today?s musicians are using every means available to expose the inner workings of electronic sound generation to the greater public. Of which, just take these sounds as a given, as something that comes out from devices so easy a child can use them. Back in the twentieth century, these means of musical creation would have taken expensive circuitry or months of computer programming. The technology available was just not good enough for the realisation of an artistic concept.

?

Towards the end of the twentieth century we saw the introduction of MIDI into musical devices. Since then, we have seen this very basic and often limited musical communication language take over and become the most prolific, ?all encompassing? technology of electronic and acoustic art. In the twenty-first century, this dated technique is still used and its limitations are ever noticeable by string and wind players all over the world. The use of MIDI has dominated the market for keyboard instruments due to the commercial interests of the founding companies. The new musical technology being produced today is liberated by the inclusion of artists in the conceptualisation of musical devices.

?

The simple comparison of basic sound generating devices over generations highlights the technological advances of music technology in the twenty-first century. If we look at the images on our televisions, in our magazines, or on billboards, musicians are no longer wielding cumbersome guitars or holding up keyboards, but they have the power to generate music from within tiny boxes with less obvious means of sound production. This is the computer music generation, and they are here to replace the old analogue electronic technology with digitalised sounds. Sounds which have no natural sound generating device that can be seen or even held.

?

The creation of sound has been the one dominating factor in the design of musical instruments. A sound generator being agitated via bow, blow or strike has a natural sound quality that we can all recognise. This knowledge of natural sound creation helps us to understand an acoustic event and even how we can control one. The physical characteristics of an instruments dictate the sound produced, the control restraints we put on it and these devices have been developed over many millennia. The same cannot be said for digital sound creation.

?

However, digital technology can no longer be considered as a new concept, as it has been around now for a few decades. Furthermore, with digital technology we are presented with an almost limitless world of sonic and musical possibilities. This technology was initially only available for the large academic institutions that could afford massive computers and synthesis devices. This digital computing may have been around for a while, but it was never more affordable than it is today. Affordability of digital devices, such as laptop computers means that the masses now have the means of manipulating the digital realm from their home or studio. Sound synthesis is only a quick click and download away and once you have the means, the possibilities are endless. These possibilities are restricted only by the end users ability or imagination.

?

Digital music has presented us with a new blank slate for musical composition. The composition of music through computers is slowly replacing the more traditional paper and pencil methods of old. This contemporary means of composition is also finding its way into traditional musical genre. It is not unnatural for say jazz musicians to have digital improvisations accompanying them on a CD or on-stage. Computer music can no longer be confined to just the electronic music taxon, but it is now a tool to be wielded by all who possess a computer. Current processor speeds can quite easily handle real time sound synthesis and modern software is designed to be graphically pleasing and intuitive to operate.

?

In the early stages of the twenty-first century, we are embracing the digital as an old friend and incorporate it into everything we can. As computers become faster, so do our means of expressing our musicality become more extravagant. Our input device is no longer a keyboard for writing a long string of complicated coding to produce a colourful tone, but a single hand gesture can be recognised as a control parameter that will change anything the musician desires. To realise these methods sensor technology must also be a considerable influence on the computer music generation. The means by which a musician interacts with his digital creations is also mutating. Controlled only by the direction of technological advancements in this field.

?

Not only are infra-red and motion sensors readily available from electronic stores and internet distributors, but motion tracking devices are being introduced into the home via games consoles. The Wii controller release in 2006 revolutionised home computer entertainment, and it was not long after that this controller was reverse engineered and applied to musical applications. Recent releases include the Sony PlayStation Move controller, with the ability to track movement and location through the use of technology similar to that of the Wii and the use of a camera. Also, Microsoft have launched the Xbox 360 Kinect system, which relies only on observation of motion to control game movements. How long before these are incorporated into twenty-first century music technology? The answer is almost instantly. Examples of the use of these devices without a games console are available online to view today. Hacking this technology is not readily accepted by the distributor, but it is impossible to stop the curious minds of creative individuals.

?

The concepts, ideas and even the technology of the newly released to the public controllers are by no means ?new? either. Academic research has been carried out for decades on capturing gestures for musical manipulation, but this was limited to the elite institutes specialising in these fields and was not available for the average amateur to reconstruct and manipulate for their own means.

?

And yet, as time creeps forwards in this century, there are those among us who yearn and even cry out for a revival of the old technology. The clinical sound of a perfectly constructed waveform is almost painful to the ears of some fans of the analogue world. The need for society to relive the old, for a trend to come around again and again requires the same technology to be reproduced and revisited. So we reach a peculiar point in time. One which sees us being given more freedom of expression than any other generation before and yet we are still pining for the ?old? sounds that coevals of the last century were limited to.

?

The production of music through natural means is inspiring, but also restrictive. The limitations of acoustic instruments become very apparent when a beginner picks one up for the first time. Whilst we have full waveform production, we also have full control over it?s creation. This control can be unstable and non-linear to a beginner, but is something that a competent player would be attracted to. Years of practice can be rewarding, but far too time consuming in this fast paced century. On the other hand, we have the engineering principles of HCI developing new musical devices with ?user friendly? principles. These principles often overlook the rewards that are coveted by skilled performers of acoustic instruments. The freedom of expression that is attained via acoustically imperfect instruments, is lost in the use of clean cut digital interfaces. However, the new music generation find the immediate rewards very gratifying and inspiring.

The ?cut and paste? computer generation is now faced with a hunger to go out and gather their own means of sound generation and the construction of analogue devices to reproduce the ?warmth? in music that is somewhat missing in today?s home produced music. Musicians are rummaging through the attics, storage rooms, second hand stores trying to reclaim that which was disposed of in order to make room for the new.

?

So what we see today, after living through the first decade, is an amalgamation of old and new ideas being brought to the public and laid on their lap. The general populous are given creative freedom to manipulate old technologies, freedom to develop new and intriguing sounds digitally, and are offered this opportunity to do so at a fraction of the cost it used to in the twentieth century. How lucky we are to be given such freedom, how lucky we are to live in the twenty-first century.
