'Hunger Games' leads Hollywood's dramatic turnaround

'The Hunger Games' posted the third-best opening in US history, adding to Hollywood's surge after a poor 2011, which saw the worst ticket sales in 16 years.

By Daniel B. Wood,?Staff writer / March 26, 2012

The $155 million opening-weekend haul for ?The Hunger Games? continues Hollywood's strong rebound from 2011, its worst year for ticket sales since 1995.?

On one hand, the movie is offering confirmation that the "Harry Potter" model ? building blockbusters from teen bestsellers ? is perhaps the surest bet in the industry today.

Yet perhaps even more than the average blockbuster, the success of "The Hunger Games" is giving some film buffs pause. The studio behind the film, Lionsgate, has been a maker of more artistic fare, and cultural critics wonder if the studio's ideals will be swayed by such a flood of cash.?

"The Hunger Games" posted the No. 3 opening weekend in US history, behind only "Harry Potter and the Dealthly Hallows, Part 2" ($169 million) and "The Dark Knight" ($158 million).

Even without ?The Hunger Games,??box office is up 16 percent over the same period last year, thanks to a string of pleasant surprises, including "The Vow" and "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax." With "The Hunger Games," box office is up 22 percent.?

The reversal is??the most dynamic turnaround I?ve ever seen," says?Paul Degarabedian,?president of Hollywood.com?s box office division.

And it points to a strong summer.??Blockbusters get people to the theatres where they see more ads and trailers for what?s coming up, and they get excited again,? he says. ?Last year was the quintessential opposite of that. Momentum was lost completely.?

The slate of films beginning May 1 includes ?The Amazing Spiderman,? "The Dark Knight Rises,? ?Men in Black 3,? and ?The Avengers.?

Moreover, "The Hunger Games" is showing, once again, that young-adult bestsellers like "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" are at this moment something of a fail-safe for the film industry.?

The US film industry is facing a perfect storm for declining box-office revenues ? some of it self-inflicted, says Susan Mackey-Kallis, professor of communication at Villanova University, in an e-mail. ?

  • An aging, baby-boomer movie audience less inclined to go out because films are rarely aimed at them.
  • An increasing number of blockbusters that cost $50 million or more, meaning they must open big to quickly pay for their high price tag. (The longer a film runs, the greater the share of its proceeds goes to the theater and not to the studio.)
  • Media technologies that make it easier to stay home and wait for the streamed release of films, as well as to have a better viewing experience on high-definition flat-screen TVs.
  • A splintered market share of adolescents with diverse tastes, along with multiple media platforms to meet their entertainment needs.

?So the only thing that sells these days is the sequel film or a film based on a hugely popular bestseller like 'The Hunger Games,' "?she says. ?With high production price tags driven by opening-weekend pressure, these are the only types of films that can succeed....?

After three days in theaters, "The Hunger Games" is already the most successful film ever made by Lionsgate ? and by some margin. It easily tops the $119 million final haul for "Fahrenheit 9/11."

The concern among some critics is that the success will push Lionsgate into a new league, and might make the studio less inclined to make films that connoisseurs value.

?One of the leading studios in doing the kind of independent and creative films was Lionsgate,? says Douglas Gomery, author of ?Hollywood Studio System: a History.?

"Now this week they?ve finally had their first big blockbuster,??he adds. ?Whether they use that to seed smaller creative films or invest in another big blockbuster is anyone?s guess. That?s the question to ask.?

Orange uncovers the UK's dormant entrepreneurs | Business Matters

iStock_000010827673XSmall

Orange has revealed that the UK is a nation of ?dormant entrepreneurs?, with over one third of the UK?s working population having come up with a business idea or invention which they believe could be a success.

However, 70 per cent of those with an idea have not acted on it, with 28 per cent of individuals admitting to not knowing where to start, indicating a lack of guidance and support for would-be entrepreneurs as barriers.

In addition, concerns over not having enough money ?and the prospect that the idea may fail were cited as key reasons why new business ideas often fall by the wayside. Economic factors are exacerbating these concerns, with 44 per cent of respondents believing a recession makes launching a business riskier, and that they would prefer to work for somebody else during difficult times.

To help overcome such fears and foster the UK?s entrepreneurial spirit, Orange Business has launched a competition to find Britain?s brightest business idea, and support its growth into a successful company. With a prize worth up to ?200,000, the winner will also receive ongoing business mentoring along with communications and marketing support.

Mike Southon, author of The Beermat Entrepreneur commented: ?The entrepreneur is the backbone of the UK economy. We are a nation of small businesses, so it is surprising that many people are too nervous to throw their hat into the ring and start their own company. For that reason, initiatives such as this business competition from Orange are great as they help some of the brightest talent in the country to get a step up on the business ladder, and achieve the full potential of what they ? and their businesses ? are capable of.??

Lower death risk seen with heart bypass surgery

(AP) ? Older patients with clogged heart arteries may have a little lower death risk over time if they have bypass operations instead of angioplasty and stents to fix the problem.

In a bypass operation, doctors move healthy segments of blood vessels from other parts of the body to create detours around clogged arteries supplying blood to the heart. Angioplasty repairs the damage through a tube pushed through a blood vessel. A tiny balloon is inflated to flatten the clog and a mesh scaffold, a stent, is placed to prop the artery open.

Researchers compared these approaches using Medicare records on 190,000 patients with two or three clogged arteries ? the largest study ever of this issue. Death rates were similar one year after either treatment. But after four years, nearly 21 percent of the angioplasty patients had died versus about 16 percent of those who had bypass surgery.

Doctors say differences in the overall health of people who had surgery versus the less drastic procedure could account for some of the results. They say angioplasty remains a good and safe option for many people.

"You're not making a mistake if you still have angioplasty," especially if you are over 65 with only one or two blockages, said Dr. Kirk Garratt of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. He is a spokesman for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, doctors who do angioplasties.

In the United States, more than a million operations or procedures are done each year to treat clogged arteries, and the study "provides comprehensive, large-scale, national data" to help doctors and patients decide which treatment is best, Dr. Susan Shurin said in a statement. She is acting director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which sponsored the study.

Results were discussed Tuesday at an American College of Cardiology conference in Chicago and published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Square's Card Case rechristened 'Pay with Square,' is first to bring geo-fenced hands-free payments to Android

Image
You might know Square for accepting payments on your smartphone via a cute dongle, but you're probably less familiar with its second offshoot, Card Case -- a separate app that has enabled hands-free and NFC-free payments at over 70,000+ merchants for more than a year now. That effort is getting a complete overhaul today, cumulating in an entire rethink of the app and experience, in addition to its more-apt new title: Pay with Square. The redesigned UI loses its former card and leather-based garnish, opting instead for a simplified list of merchants sorted by distance and relevancy. Also making its debut is a search box, a spiffy map view and the ability to share merchants to friends through text, email or Twitter. We're most excited, though, for feature parity across iPhone and Android, which means formerly iOS-exclusive features like the auto-creation of tabs at pre-approved venues (thanks to iOS 5's geo-fencing APIs) are now present to green little robots everywhere. That's no small feat, as the company's had to roll their own geo-location API to pick up where Google's left off. We're still waiting for the Google Play listing to update, but we'll have a fresh link for you when it does.

No, this is not a flashback: DWS calls Ryan budget ?a tornado through America?s nursing homes?

posted at 5:25 pm on March 23, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Friday afternoon pop quiz! Which is easier? (A) Passing a budget and bearing the brunt of political demagoguery or (B) not passing a budget and delivering the demagoguery?

It must be nice to be a Democrat in Congress. It must be particularly nice to be Debbie Wasserman Schultz, whose job seems to amount to spouting colorless, confused platitudes that pay no respect to the earnest efforts of her Republican colleagues. Paul Ryan works assiduously to garner the support of a handful of Democrats for a feasible plan to reform?Medicare. He introduces a responsible budget that?s maligned even by members of his own party. He patiently explains it to anyone who will listen.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, meanwhile, does this:

Ratcheting up the rhetoric on the eve of Vice President?Joe Biden?s visit to a South Florida senior community, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman?Debbie Wasserman Schultz?today likened Republican Medicare proposals to ?a tornado through America?s nursing homes.? ?

Said Wasserman Schultz: ?The Romney-Ryan budget would be devastating to seniors and older Americans. It is a Republican path to poverty that would pass like a tornado through America?s nursing homes where millions of America?s seniors receive long-term and end-of-life care.?

The Ryan plan ? which has no chance of passing the Democrat-controlled Senate ? would leave Medicare intact for current recipients and those nearing retirement. But when those who are now 54 and younger reach retirement, the plan would replace the current fee-for-service program with subsidies to purchase insurance.

Pay particular attention to that last paragraph. It was true last year and it?s true again this year: Paul Ryan?s plan doesn?t affect current seniors. At all. Democrats lied about this the first time around and Politifact called them on it. Undaunted, DWS is doing it again.

As Guy Benson writes, if she?s going to lie, it?d be nice if she?d at least put a little creativity into her misleading criticisms:

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I at least expected them to brainstorm a list of?new?unhinged descriptions of this year?s Republican budget.? I?m almost disappointed the 2013 Path to Prosperity hasn?t been dubbed ?a Republican Path to Perdition, holding American seniors? heads underwater in bathtubs until they drown,? or ?a Republican March to Misery, herding seniors into giant microwaves and baking them until they explode.?? Try harder, guys.

Here?s hoping Karen Harrington retires Debbie Wasserman Schultz from Congress for good.

Trade Mission to Create Opportunities for Agriculture in China

News

US & CHINA - Acting Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Michael Scuse will lead nearly 40 American businesses on a US Department of Agriculture trade mission to China March 23-28. US agricultural exports to China have grown more than 80 per cent in the past three years.

The USDA trade mission aims to help American businesses strike new deals, strengthen business ties, expand their markets, and support jobs for Americans.

"This is the largest USDA trade mission to date," said Mr Scuse. "China and the United States share a special relationship, and we embrace this opportunity to demonstrate that our US farmers, ranchers, and producers are reliable suppliers of the highest-quality food and agricultural products. At the same time, USDA and our federal partners will continue to aggressively work to expand export opportunities and reduce barriers to trade."

Also joining Mr Scuse on the mission are leaders from six state departments of agriculture, including Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey, Oklahoma Agriculture Secretary Jim Reese and representatives from North Carolina, Illinois, Kansas and South Dakota. In Shanghai, the delegation will be joined by Deputy Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Darci Vetter and Ambassador Islam Siddiqui, who is the chief agricultural negotiator for the Office of the US Trade Representative.

During stops in Chengdu and Shanghai, participants will meet with dozens of Chinese producers, importers, buyers, distributors and investors. The mission also coincides with the Food Ingredients China (FIC) trade show where Scuse will cut the ribbon to open the show's USA Pavilion.

Chinese demand for bulk commodities like soybeans and cotton is high, while demand for high-value US products like meat and processed foods continues to grow. Bilateral trade between the United States and China in fiscal year 2011 reached an all-time high of $32.1 billion. US exports to China were $22.8 billion and exports from China to the United States were $9.3 billion. Today, USDA's largest overseas presence is in China. With seven offices in five cities, USDA is well-positioned to support American agriculture and agribusinesses.

The Obama Administration, with Agriculture Secretary Vilsack's leadership, has aggressively worked to expand export opportunities and reduce barriers to trade, helping to push agricultural exports to record levels in 2011 and beyond. US agriculture is currently experiencing one of its best periods in history thanks to the productivity and resourcefulness of our producers. Today, net farm income is at near record levels while debt has been cut in half since the 1980s.

Overall, American agriculture supports 1 in 12 jobs in the United States and provides American consumers with 83 per cent of the food we consume, while maintaining affordability and choice. Strong agricultural exports contribute to a positive US trade balance, create jobs, boost economic growth and support President Obama's National Export Initiative goal of doubling all US exports by the end of 2014.

Army: PTSD treatable; some diagnosed return to war

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? It is still not known if the soldier accused of killing 17 Afghans was ever diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder ? but even if he had been, that alone would not have prevented him from being sent back to war.

The Army diagnosed 76,176 soldiers with PTSD between 2000 and 2011. Of those, 65,236 soldiers were diagnosed at some stage of their deployment.

Many returned to the battlefield after mental health providers determined their treatment worked and their symptoms had gone into remission, Army officials and mental health professionals who treat troops say. The Army does not track the exact number in combat diagnosed with PTSD nor those who are in combat and taking medicine for PTSD.

The case of Sgt. Robert Bales has sparked debate about whether the Army failed in detecting a soldier's mental instability or pushed him too far. The Army is reviewing all its mental health programs and its screening process in light of the March 11 shooting spree in two slumbering Afghan villages that killed families, including nine children.

For some Americans, Bales is the epitome of a soldier afflicted by war's psychological wounds, pushed by the Army beyond his limits.

Bales' attorney says he does not know if his client suffered from PTSD but his initial statements appear to be building a possible defense around the argument that the horrific crime was the result of a 10-year military veteran sent back to a war zone for a fourth time after being traumatized.

Mental health professionals say it's reasonable to consider PTSD but it was likely not the sole factor that sent the 38-year-old father from Washington state over the edge. Still, there is much that is not known about the psychological wounds of war and how they can manifest themselves, and even less is known about the impact of multiple deployments.

Military officials say they have to rely on their mental health experts to decide whether someone is mentally fit to go back into war, and they cannot make a blanket policy of not redeploying troops diagnosed with PTSD. The provider makes a recommendation, but the ultimate decision to deploy a soldier rests with the unit commander.

Army Secretary John McHugh told Congress this week that "we have in the military writ large over 50,000 folks in uniform who have had at least four deployments." Some have served double-digit deployments, where they witnessed traumatic events.

"People do not understand that you can be treated for PTSD," said Dr. Heidi Kraft, who cared for Marines in Iraq in 2004 as a Navy combat psychologist. "It's a matter of turning a traumatic memory into just that ? a memory rather than something that haunts you.

"You can't say the person hasn't live through trauma, but symptoms can go completely into remission, where a person is very functional and in fact emerges from treatment better or more resilient. There is the misconception out there that if you have this diagnosis, you will always be disabled, and that's just not true."

It also depends on the severity of the PTSD, which can last anywhere from months to years.

Some troops treated for PTSD yearn to return to the battlefield where they feel more comfortable surrounded by their fellow troops and on a mission than in the unsettling quiet of their home life, mental health professionals say.

But Bales' attorney said that was not the case with his client.

John Henry Browne of Seattle said Bales had suffered injuries during his deployments, including a serious foot injury and head trauma and did not want to go on a fourth tour.

Military officials insist that Bales had been properly screened and declared fit for combat.

Army officials say soldiers sent to war may be checked up to five times, including before being deployed, during combat, once they return home and six months and a year later. The Army screens soldiers for depression and PTSD, asking questions to find out about any social stressors, sleep disruption and other problems. Those who are detected as having problems go on to a second phase of screening.

Officials say, however, that no test is considered diagnostically definitive for mental illness in general or PTSD in particular.

Critics say the Army has a history of bandaging the problem and rushing troops back into combat by loading them up on prescription drugs. Military courts also do not recognize PTSD as a legitimate defense, said attorney Geoffrey Nathan who has represented a number of court martialed troops.

"They're still in a state of denial as to what combat soldiers go through in the field of battle," Nathan said.

The Army says it's committed to the health of the force, pointing out it has invested $710 million in behavioral health care and doubled the number of mental health workers since 2007.

"The Army has a robust policy to return soldiers who are fit for duty to combat units as soon as possible," said Army spokesman George Wright. "If a soldier has a broken leg, and he is healed, and fully capable of conducting the mission, he's eligible to return to duty. It's the same when qualified medical doctors, psychologists or psychiatrists determine a soldier suffering from a behavioral health disorder is healed. If he displays the signs that he's fully capable of accomplishing the mission as a solider, he'll be returned to duty."

Treatment can result in cure for some patients with PTSD, but more often results in improvement in symptoms and functioning, not a complete cure, according to the Army. PTSD can recur after treatment on exposure to other traumatic events or stressors. According to some studies, up to 80 percent of people with PTSD also suffer from another psychiatric disorder, making it challenging to make an accurate diagnosis.

The Army says its doctors look at a soldier's current clinical condition and rely heavily on the soldier telling the provider whether symptoms have subsided. The Army says it recognizes that deploying a soldier who is not medically ready puts both the individual and unit at risk.

PTSD is a condition that results from experiencing or seeing a traumatic event, whether it's being in a car crash or witnessing a battlefield casualty.

Browne said a fellow soldier's leg had been blown off days before the rampage and Bales had seen the wounds. A U.S. defense official said it is likely that a soldier from Bales' unit suffered a leg wound a day or two before the March 11 shootings, but military officials have no evidence that this has any connection to the massacre.

Bales also remembers very little or nothing from the time the military believes he went on the rampage, according to his attorney.

Not remembering a traumatic event or avoiding the memory is a classic symptom of PTSD, along with recurrent nightmares, flashbacks, irritability and feeling distant from other people.

But mental health experts believe other factors were at play. Bales' personal history shows he had a past assault charge against a former girlfriend that required anger management classes, and also financial troubles.

Those who suffer from PTSD are prone to acting out, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD. But the violent behavior is usually against family members or fellow troops, not strangers, mental health professionals say.

Dr. Harry Croft, a San Antonio, Texas psychiatrist who has diagnosed 7,000 veterans with PTSD for the Veterans Affairs Department and written the book "I Always Sit With My Back to The Wall" about PTSD said the case has set back years of work to erase the perception that veterans are walking time bombs who can go off without warning. Veteran advocates point to one tabloid headline labeling the then-unidentified suspect "Sergeant Psycho."

That stereotype, they say, has caused employers to shy away from hiring veterans returning from war and steered singles away from getting involved in relationships with them.

"Even the most severe cases of PTSD alone would not have caused such a heinous act like this," said Croft. "Something else was definitely going on, most probably severe depression, psychosis, substance abuse or he received some terrible news from home that pushed him over the edge."

Joshua Ledet Has a Way About Him

Joshua Ledet chose very well on last night's performance edition of American Idol.

The soulful singer chose one of Billy Joel's more heartfelt ballads, sitting calmly and serenading viewers with a rendition of "She's Got A Way." Heejun Han's goofy take on "My Life" it was definitely not. See for yourself:

Where would we rank Ledet's rendition among this week's Joel covers? Certainly in the top five.

Colton Dixon stole the night with "Piano Man," while Elise Testone also excelled with her take on "Vienna." Who was your favorite performer of the evening?

Seeking Causes Proximate and Ultimate of the March 11 Afghan Massacre

Legions of experts are trying to fathom what drove Staff Sergeant Robert Bales to allegedly slaughter 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, on March 11. Many proximate causes have been proposed, including the strain of Bales? four military deployments; his recent financial troubles and failure to get a promotion; his repeated exposure to death and carnage; and his own injuries, including brain damage.

Seeking insights into the incident, I emailed Roy Eidelson and Stephen Soldz, past-presidents of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, a non-profit that, according to its Web site, ?applies psychological knowledge and expertise to promote peace, social justice, human rights, and sustainability.? I first encountered their work while researching a U.S. Army program ?Comprehensive Soldier Fitness.? Eidelson and Soldz are critical of CSF, which seeks to boost troops? psychological resilience. Here are excerpts from their responses to my query about the Bales incident:

Eidelson: ?Psychological difficulties?which can include erratic or impulsive behavior?are greater and more likely among those soldiers who have been deployed more often, those who have faced greater actual combat exposure, and those who have already experienced psychological trauma. Bales reportedly scores high on all three counts (and he seemingly didn?t want to deploy this fourth time), assuming there?s some validity to reports that he may have suffered from some degree of traumatic brain injury and possibly PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] as well. So it seems that there?s little question he could have been recognized as belonging to a ?higher risk? category for a range of detrimental behaviors (including both suicide and homicide). Part of the problem is that this is presumably also true of thousands of other currently deployed U.S. soldiers as well.

?So a key question is whether it is only in hindsight that we can realize that Bales would have been a good candidate for non-deployment after his three tours in Iraq, and a good candidate for psychological intervention based on his experiences there. But regrettably this type of decision reflects what could be considered a commonplace ?conflict of interest? situation between the Army?s mission and the welfare of an individual soldier (by the way, this is something that CSF fails to address). The Army wagered that the Afghanistan mission would benefit from Bales? participation (despite any psychological vulnerability on his part), and they lost that bet in a huge way. At best, they simultaneously hoped that Bales? deployment would not be harmful to him individually (as with any soldier in harm?s way). They were clearly wrong about that as well.

?Events with very low baseline probabilities, such as Bales? massacre, are exceedingly difficult or impossible to predict with any accuracy?it?s far too likely that you?ll be wrong if you predict that a specific individual will do something like this if he has no history of having done so in the past. Whatever the most proximate immediate stressor was before the massacre, it presumably wasn?t sufficient on its own to lead to this horrific outcome?other conditions and pre-conditions were necessary as well. The easy prediction to make is that some soldier, somewhere, sometime, is going to pose a significant risk for doing something awful.

?The bottom line, I think, is that a universal program like CSF is not the answer in the Bales case anyway, in part because resilience training isn?t likely to overcome the effects of multiple deployments, significant combat exposure, etc. And it?s not at all clear that we would ultimately want a program that would miraculously accomplish that anyway, given the complex ethical issues involved in creating the ?indomitable? soldier.??

Soldz had this to say: ?This case is a profoundly disturbing illustration of an issue that is seldom mentioned by most writers on these wars, that among the major victims of the stress and psychological problems [such as PTSD] are not just the soldiers, their families, and the military and its mission (the usual victims), but the civilians under occupation?

?The military claims that aiding these civilians is a prime reason for the troops to be there, but protecting them is usually a secondary consideration. Troops are routinely taught that ?the mission? comes first. This is especially true with the field commanders, junior officers and non-commissioned officers, who, I?ve often been told by soldiers, tell those under their command, ?The Geneva Conventions are fine, for training. But, in the field, do whatever it takes.?

?I think that the military would be better advised to spend more time working with troops on the difficulty and strain of occupying an alien land (as distinct from deployment stress) and on the centrality to the mission of humanizing and protecting civilians at all costs than on CSF type resilience programs. In order to humanize civilians, they would have to drop their simplistic ?bad guys? rhetoric and truly help the troops understand the profound ambivalence that Afghans often have toward foreigners who they may need, but who they also fear and resent. Working through an example of ?how would you feel if Afghans invaded your neighborhood and how would you and your neighbors react? could be far more valuable than CSF.

?A universal CSF-type program is extremely unlikely to deal in any positive way with extreme instances like the Bales case. Rather, one has to reduce their likelihood by reducing the stress through reduced deployments, greater steps to encourage stressed individuals to not redeploy. Unfortunately, the latter conflicts with the supreme importance of unit cohesion in allowing the military to function. ?Loyalty? to the unit and the mission has to be redefined to include not sending those who shouldn?t be sent.?

Here is my take on the Bales incident. We must certainly seek to identify factors?from the neurological to the economic?that can provoke soldiers into committing war crimes, so that the military can take steps to reduce the incidence of such acts. But we should also recognize that, whatever the proximate causes of the massacre in Afghanistan turn out to be, the ultimate cause is moral and political, and all Americans bear responsibility for what happened. As long as we accept that wars are a morally acceptable way to solve problems, soldiers will continue to commit atrocities, including the killing of women and children, because that?s what happens, inevitably, in wartime.

Is Using An Anti-Wrinkle Cream Really What You Need? ? Beauty ...

Many people look at themselves in the mirror and wonder, ?Should I start using wrinkle cream or anti-aging cream to help prevent wrinkles, especially around my eyes?? This is an interesting question, as there are many people who would actually benefit from using wrinkle cream. However, how can you know if wrinkle cream is right for you or not? Here are some things to keep in mind when considering whether wrinkle cream is a good idea for you:

The sun causes wrinkles ? Did you know that the sun is directly responsible for causing wrinkles? The radiation in the UV rays hitting the earth can do serious damage to your skin, as the radiation dries out all the good stuff from your skin. If you spend a lot of time out in the sun, you will begin to notice that you are developing wrinkles in your skin, especially around your eyes.? For those who enjoy spending time under the sun, you may want to consider using anti-aging cream as a way to help prevent your skin from getting damaged and dry and beginning to sag.

Eye muscles see a lot of use ? Your eyes are one of the most used muscles in your body, as they are always active from the minute you open your eyelids until they are closed. Your eyes are always moving, meaning that the muscles that control your eyes are always flexing and relaxing. This means that the skin that is around your eyes is constantly being strained by your eye muscles, and it is not hard to believe that the muscle strain could be causing the skin around your eyes to start sagging. Wrinkle cream helps to not only prevent crows? feet from forming around your eyes, but can tighten your skin and help prevent sagging.

(AP) ? Norfolk State was a good story while it lasted.

Against Florida, that wasn't for long.

Kenny Boynton scored 20 points and the balanced Gators routed the 15th-seeded Spartans 84-50 on Sunday to reach the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

Any hope Norfolk State had of matching the upset it pulled against Missouri on Friday vanished as the Gators went on a 25-0 run in the first half.

Now Florida is off to Phoenix to face Marquette on Thursday in the round of 16.

"It's a great feeling, a good accomplishment," said the Gators' Erving Walker. "It would be even better to get to the Final Four, so we've still got work to do."

The Gators (25-10) had a business-as-usual air about them after dispatching the Spartans. After all, Florida is 17-2 in NCAA tournament games since 2005-06. Combined with their 71-45 win over Virginia on Friday, the Gators left Omaha with two wins by a total margin of 60 points.

Not too shabby for a No. 7 seed.

"There are certain guys who want this kind of stage," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "In this tournament you have to have players who play fearlessly on both ends of the floor and are not worried about making mistakes and are competitive and are driven to want to be great."

Norfolk State (26-10) shook up the West Regional with its upset Friday and was trying to become the first 15 seed to reach the regional semifinals.

Florida put a quick end to that idea, making five 3-pointers during the 25-0 run that made it 29-6 midway through the first half.

"They have a coach who has won two national championships. Clearly it was my first time and our team's first time," Norfolk State coach Anthony Evans said. "If we get back to this point we will know how to handle it and how to get to the next step."

Florida, 4 for 23 from beyond the arc against Virginia, rediscovered its shooting touch early against Norfolk State, making five of its first eight 3-point attempts and 10 of 28 for the game.

Walker finished with 15 points for the Gators. Bradley Beal scored 14, Mike Rosario had 12 and Erik Murphy 10.

"Once we went on the 25-0 run, they kind of shut down from there on," Beal said. "Because we knew they were capable of making 3s, we didn't want them to keep the game close and get back into the game. So we did a great job of putting the pedal to the metal and knocking down shots and playing good defense."

The resounding loss put a damper on a fun couple of days for Norfolk State center Kyle O'Quinn, who got the celebrity treatment after collecting 26 points and 14 rebounds against Missouri.

O'Quinn was a walking quote machine in the 24 hours after the shocking win over Missouri. He talked about how the upset even blew up his own bracket, how he watched the cheerleaders during breaks in the action and how he was more concerned with having fun than playing basketball in high school.

He wasn't nearly as entertaining on the court against Florida. He missed eight of nine shots and finished with four points ? his lowest output since he scored two points in a 32-point December loss at Illinois State. His only field goal was a first-half dunk, and he played only 23 minutes after logging 37 against Missouri.

"We knew this was going to be tough," O'Quinn said. "You have to have things go your way, and tonight nothing went our way. When they hit a 3, it kills the momentum. It pushes you back. When you see the scoreboard and it's not going the way you want it, it's tough."

The Spartans, who shot 54 percent and made 10 of 19 3-pointers against Missouri, shot 27 percent and were 4 of 24 on 3s against the Gators.

Boynton, who had made just 4 of his previous 21 3s, hit from long distance to start Florida's decisive run.

"I haven't ever been part of anything like that, a 25-0 run," Boynton said. "But I think we did a great job getting stops and converting on the offensive end, and that showed the level of focus we had out there."

The big surge featured the frenetic temp that Florida enjoys. The Spartans missed 10 shots in a row, and each time the smaller Gators got the rebound, they pushed the ball quickly up the floor.

Erik Murphy hit back-to-back 3s, Bradley made one and Beal tipped in Scottie Wilbekin's missed 3 before Norfolk State ended a field-goal drought that lasted more than 7 minutes.

Norfolk State got into the tournament by winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament. The Spartans carried an eight-game winning streak into the matchup with Florida and came into the arena exuding confidence ? and played with it the first few minutes.

O'Quinn, who took only 30 3-pointers for the season, opened the game by launching one from above the top of the key. He missed, then went back on defense and blocked Patric Young's first shot.

Chris McEachin hit a 3, and Rodney McCauley swooped in to put back a miss, got fouled and made the free throw, and Norfolk State was up 6-4.

Then came Florida's game-breaking run. The Spartans' next, and last, highlight came nine minutes later on a backboard-shaking dunk by O'Quinn. Problem was, that was the big guy's first points of the game, and it only cut Florida's lead to 33-13.

The Spartans received a standing ovation as they walked off the court after the game.

"For everybody to witness that step forward we took as a university, you've got to be proud," O'Quinn said. "We were not satisfied with losing, but we knew coming in you either win a national championship or you lose. That's the nature of the game. We did something that's never been done at our university before."
