HARTFORD, Conn.? -- Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie signed a long-term contract Saturday, then walked onto the court to a standing ovation and watched his team improve to 10-2 with a fourth straight win.

"It was a good day in my life," said Ollie.

Shabazz Napier scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help Connecticut over Washington 61-53 on Saturday in the final nonconference game of the year for both teams.

Omar Calhoun led UConn with 14 points and Ryan Boatright added 12 to help the Huskies to their fourth consecutive win.

Scott Suggs had 15 to lead Washington (8-5), which lost for the first time in five games.

UConn's win came hours after Ollie agreed to a new 5 1/2-year contract worth just under $7 million. Ollie had been coaching under a one-season deal that he signed after taking over from Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun in September.

"We got excited for him, and we wanted to give him his first career win as UConn's new long-term head coach," said Napier.

Ollie said his legs were shaking during the standing ovation as the student section chanted his name.

"I was excited for the moment," he said. "I just never thought it could happen for a guy out of South Central Los Angeles, to be up here at UConn and be a head basketball coach.?

UConn held Washington star C.J. Wilcox to just five points on 2-of-12 shooting. Wilcox, who came in scoring more than 19 points per game, had scored 20 or more in three straight games and seven of the Huskies' last eight.? He had scored in double figures in every game this season.

"C.J. had some looks that he normally doesn't miss," said Washington coach Lorenzo Romar. "A lot of his shots were contested early, then after that he had some wide open looks that he couldn't get to go down. But that wasn't just C.J.? It seemed like it was the story of our team tonight.?

Connecticut held Washington to season lows in points and field goal percentage at 29.7 percent (19 of 64). Washington hit just 4 of 17 3-pointers.

UConn also outrebounded Washington 40-36. Connecticut had been outrebounded in 10 of their first 11 games by an average of over six rebounds per game.

"We were just trying to hit first," said Enosch Wolf, who finished with nine boards. "I was just trying to get every ball that I could. That was my mindset going in.?

Connecticut stretched a five-point halftime lead by scoring the first seven points of the second half to go up 38-26. Its 15-2 run was capped by a 3-point shot by Napier from the corner.

UConn pushed that lead to 14 on Omar Calhoun's layup with 15 minutes to play.

But Shawn Kemp Jr. had a layup, a dunk and a blocked shot to help close that gap to 48-44 and force a UConn timeout with 8:15 to play.

Washington stayed within five before jumpers by Boatright and Omar Calhoun stretched it back to nine with just over 3 minutes left and put an exclamation point on the game with an ally-oop dunk from Omar Calhoun to the 7-foot-1 Wolf.

A layup by Wilcox cut the lead to six with 32 seconds left, but Omar Calhoun hit two free throws on the other end to seal it.

"We worked hard the whole year just for (Ollie) to get this bonus deal," Omar Calhoun said. "He definitely deserved the extension, so I'm happy for him.?

Washington had jumped to an early 16-10 lead as UConn missed some early free throws, including four on one play.

Those were shot after Aziz N'Diaye picked up a technical foul for kicking Omar Calhoun after fouling him on a drive to the basket.

Despite the missed free throws, UConn went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a steal and double-clutch layup from Napier, to take a 21-16 lead.

But Connecticut missed all seven of its first-half attempts from 3-point range and Washington stayed in the game despite having both N'Diaye and Abdul Gaddy in foul trouble. Gaddy picked up his third foul with just under 4 minutes left in the half and ended up fouling out.

Washington trailed Connecticut 31-26 at halftime.

Washington fell to 1-2 in Connecticut this season. They beat Seton Hall and lost to Ohio State in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in nearby Uncasville in November.

They dropped to 2-13 in games played in the Eastern Time Zone under coach Lorenzo Romar.

UConn visits Marquette for its Big East Opener on New Year's Day, while Washington opens the Pac-12 season at Washington State on Jan. 5.

The game was played in front of a crowd thinned by a storm that was expected to dump more than eight inches of snow on Hartford Saturday evening.

Jim Calhoun, who retired in September, missed his first game this season, vacationing in Florida. Ollie said he tried to reach his mentor by telephone on Saturday to tell him about his new deal.

"I think he's on the 14th hole in Miami," Ollie said. "But wherever he is at, I know he's got a great big smile on his face.?

5 Kinds of Tattoo

Natural? triggered by injuries

Amateur/Professional? makes use of traditional tattooing approaches and devices

Cosmetic? thought about as permanent comprise

Medical? made use of to show exactly what allergic reactions or disease an individual has

Long-term Tattoo Removal

Common Skin Art Tattoo is typically considered long-term because it is impossible to be removed naturally; it could not be removed by water or alcohol. On the other hand, these long-term tattoo designs can still be eliminated by means of laser treatment.

Getting rid of these permanent tattoo designs can trigger severe pain which is more compared to the pain of applying them on your skin. The approaches utilized in this laser skin art removal include excision, cryosurgery, salabrasion and dermabrasion.

Tattooing by an amateur that usually takes location inside jails has a raised threat of getting you an infection. There are severe infections that could be sent through unsterilized equipment and polluted ink and needles. Some of these infections are staph, herpes, hepatitis, tuberculosis, tetanus and HIV.

'Layaway Secret Santas' Pay Off Accounts Of Families Across The Country

Christmas is still about a week away, but for many Americans, Santa has already come to town.

This holiday season, anonymous donors across the country are hitting some of the nation?s biggest retailers. The so-called "layaway secret Santas" are handing over checks and cash ranging anywhere from $200 to $10,000 to pay off the remaining balances of customers who put Christmas presents on layaway -- no strings attached.

On Tuesday morning, a Walmart store in Hastings, Mich., received a $10,000 check from an anonymous donor to pay off 43 customers' layaway accounts in their entirety, 24 Hour News 8 reported. Walmart Assistant Manager Carla Jiles told 24 Hour News 8 that one woman was so shocked by the gesture that store associates thought she may have fainted when they notified her by phone that her gifts had been paid off.

In a similar sign of Christmas giving, another donor called a Toys R Us in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., requesting to donate $10,000 for the layaway items of strangers, ABC 25 WPBF reported.

Toys R Us customers from Washington County, Pa., recently got a layaway receipt saying simply that their presents had been ?paid for by Santa,? WPXI-TV reported. Thinking that the receipt was a scam, they called the store only to find out it was real, and four other families layaways were paid off as well.

The rise in layaway Santas has gotten so much attention this year that Toys R Us announced it will donate $200 worth of toys, or the value of the average layaway order at its stores, every time someone pays off a stranger's layaway order. The retailer will continue making donations until $1 million in toys has been given away.

Other secret Santas are doing what they can to pay off the balance of one lucky family's account. Stacey Weidner, a mother of a 4-year-old girl, got a phone call from a Kmart associate in Shillington, Pa., informing her that her $450 layaway bill filled with toys for her daughter was ?paid off by a Christmas angel," NBC reported. A woman in Houston, Texas, owed close to $300 for toys for her kids at Walmart until her account was paid off by an unidentified man, ABC reported.

According to CNBC, 41 percent of Americans plan on using layaway programs this holiday season. An option that has become increasingly popular during the slow economic recovery, layaway has become easier and cheaper as many of the biggest retailers started their programs earlier and waived more fees this year.

In an interview with New Science, Pamala Wiepking, an associate professor at Erasmus University in the Netherlands who has studied philanthropy, said that people are persuaded to give more when they see other role models doing the same, which could explain the copycat nature of this layaway secret Santa phenomenon. Wiepking said that religious people, older people and women tend to be more generous when it comes to donations.

(AP) ? The hours-long gang-rape and near-fatal beating of a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi triggered outrage and anger across the country Wednesday as Indians demanded action from authorities who have long ignored persistent violence and harassment against women.

In the streets and in Parliament, calls rose for stringent and swift punishment against those attacking women, including a proposal to make rapists eligible for the death penalty. As the calls for action grew louder, two more gang-rapes were reported, including one in which the 10-year-old victim was killed.

"I feel it is sick what is happening across the country. . It is totally sick, and it needs to stop," said Smitha, a 32-year-old protester who goes by only one name.

Thousands of demonstrators clogged the streets in front of New Delhi's police headquarters, protested near Parliament and rallied outside a major university. Angry university students set up roadblocks across the city, causing massive traffic jams.

Hundreds rallied outside the home of the city's top elected official before police dispersed them with water cannons, a move that earned further condemnation from opposition leaders, who accused the government of being insensitive.

"We want to jolt people awake from the cozy comfort of their cars. We want people to feel the pain of what women go through every day," said Aditi Roy, a Delhi University student.

As protests raged in cities across India, at least two girls were gang-raped, with one of them killed.

Police on Wednesday fished out the body of a 10-year old girl from a canal in Bihar state's Saharsa district. Police superintendent Ajit Kumar Satyarthi said the girl had been gang-raped and killed and her body dumped in the canal. Police were investigating and a breakthrough was expected soon, Satyarthi said.

Elsewhere, a 14 -year old schoolgirl was in critical condition in Banka district of Bihar after she was raped by four men, said Jyoti Kumar, the district education officer.

The men have been identified, but police were yet to make any arrests, Kumar said.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old victim of the first rape lay in critical condition in the hospital with severe internal injuries, doctors said.

Police said six men raped the woman and savagely beat her and her companion with iron rods on a bus driving around the city ? passing through several police checkpoints ? before stripping them and dumping them on the side of the road Sunday night.

Delhi police chief Neeraj Kumar said four men have been arrested and a search was underway for the other two.

Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress Party, visited the victim, promised swift action against the perpetrators and called for police to be trained to deal with crimes against women.

"It is a matter of shame that these incidents recur with painful regularity and that our daughters, sisters and mothers are unsafe in our capital city," she wrote in a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

In New Delhi and across India, the outpouring of anger is unusual in a country where attacks against women are rarely prosecuted. The Times of India newspaper dedicated four pages to the rape Wednesday, demanding an example be made of the rapists, while television stations debated the nation's treatment of its women.

Opposition lawmakers shouted slogans and protested outside Parliament and called for making rape a capital crime. Cutting across party affiliations, lawmakers demanded the government announce a plan to safeguard women in the city.

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told Parliament he had ordered increased police patrols on the streets, especially at night.

Shinde said the government has introduced bills to increase the punishment for rapes and other crimes against women, but they are bogged down in Parliament.

Analysts and protesters said the upsurge of anger was chiefly due to increasing incidents of crime against women and the seeming inability of authorities to protect them.

"We have been screaming ourselves hoarse demanding greater security for women and girls. But the government, the police, and others responsible for public security have ignored the daily violence that women face," said Sehba Farooqui, a women's rights activist.

Farooqui said women's groups were demanding fast-track courts to deal with rape and other crimes against women.

In India's painfully slow justice system, cases can languish for 10 to 15 years before reaching court.

"We have thousands of rape cases pending in different courts of the country. As a result, there is no fear of law," says Ranjana Kumari, a sociologist and head of the New Delhi-based Center for Social Research.

"We want this case to be dealt with within 30 days and not the go the usual way when justice is denied to rape victims because of inordinate delays and the rapists go scot-free," Farooqui said.

Analysts say crimes against women are on the rise as more young women leave their homes to join the work force in India's booming economy, even as deep-rooted social attitudes that women are inferior remain unchanged. Many families look down on women, viewing the girl child as a burden that forces them to pay a huge dowry to marry her off.

Kumari says a change can come about only when women are seen as equal to men.

Rapes in India remain drastically underreported. In many cases, families do not report rapes due to the stigma that follows the victim and her family. In other instances, families may decide not to report a rape out of frustration with the long delays in court and harassment at the hands of the police. Police, themselves are reluctant to register cases of rape and domestic violence in order to keep down crime figures or to elicit a bribe from the victim.

In a sign of the protesters' fury, Khushi Pattanaik, a student, said death was too easy a punishment for the rapists, they should instead be castrated and forced to suffer as their victim did.

"It should be made public so that you see it, you feel it and you also live with it . the kind of shame and guilt," she said.

Industrial chemicals: A new breed of stable anti-aromatic compound

Dec. 18, 2012 ? By synthesizing a stable "antiaromatic" compound, as well as a never before seen intermediate version of that compound, chemists at The University of Texas at Austin have written an important new chapter in the story of modern chemistry.

The research was done in collaboration with an international roster of colleagues from Yonsei University in Korea, the University of Hyderbad in India, and Osaka University in Japan. The results were published this week in Nature Chemistry.

This particular story began in 1825, when English scientist Michael Faraday first isolated benzene from gas lights. Benzene would later be identified as one of a class of compounds known as aromatics, which have immense importance in both biological function and industrial production.

In humans, for instance, all five nucleotides that constitute DNA and RNA are aromatic. In industry, aromatics derived from oil and coal tar are precursors to, among other things, plastics, solvents, lubricants, rubber, dyes, herbicides, and textiles.

"Benzene is probably the most famous aromatic compound," said Jonathan Sessler, the Rowland Pettit Centennial Chair in Chemistry in the College of Natural Sciences. "But there are many other critically important aromatic species. The heme in hemoglobin, which is what gives blood its red color, is one of a group of aromatics known as porphyrins. Without them we'd have either a very different or no existence."

Aromatic compounds have a ring-like structure that enables electrons to be shared amongst the different bonds between the atoms. This results, among other things, in an extraordinary degree of stability. They tend to persist in their structure under conditions that would cause other molecules to react.

"That's one of the reasons why they're so useful in industry," said Sessler. "It's also why they tend to be pro-carcinogenic. They're very hard for us to metabolize or catabolize, and the results of that are usually not benign. One of the first class of tumors ever observed was testicular cancer. It was highly prevalent among 18th century chimney sweeps, who were exposed to aromatic compounds found in coal tar."

Sessler made his name as a chemist synthesizing new classes of porphyrins, including Texaphyrin, a very large porphyrin, which is being developed as a key element in a potential new approach to treating cancer.

What he and his colleagues have now done is taken an already existing molecule, which was first synthesized by Sessler in 1992, and found a way to stabilize it in its so-called antiaromatic form. Antiaromatic systems are the evil twins of aromatics. Compounds that are antiaromatic have two additional or two fewer electrons than aromatic compounds.

"They don't want to exist in a planar form without giving up or adding the two electrons that distinguish them from their aromatic analogues," said Sessler, "so they tend to twist around, to a lower energy state. That destroys their antiaromaticity. The net result is that bona fide antiaromatic compounds are elusive. What we have done, by rational design, is put big buttressing groups around the compounds, basically clamping them into place."

The resulting compounds are antiaromatic -- with two electrons gone -- and an intermediate something, with both aromatic and antiaromatic properties, that doesn't have a common name yet because it hasn't been seen before.

"When you have to struggle for the words to describe what's being done, you know that it's cutting edge," said Christian Brueckner, a fellow porphyrin chemist and a professor at The University of Connecticut. "Twenty years ago when I was a graduate student I was told simply that you can't make large antiaromatics like this. Later the idea was that you can make them but you can't do much with them. Now you can do it, and it can switch between states, and it can exist in the intermediate state. It's just a beautiful progression of scholarship, a beautiful example of how the ability of chemists to manipulate matter is advancing."

In their natural state antiaromatics are as unstable as aromatics are stable. As a result they have only been stabilized a few times in the history of the field. The antiaromatic that Sessler has made, working with colleagues in Korea, Japan, and India, is significant simply for joining this elite group. As significant is the synthesis of the intermediate state, a scientific first, as well as the capacity of the system to be toggled back and forth between the three different electron states.

"It's the first time you can really do a Coke vs. Pepsi taste test," said Sessler. "We've had very sophisticated theory for a long time, but you need positive and negative controls in science to reach a really robust conclusion. Now we finally have a detailed, controlled comparison of what aromaticity really does, how it changes interactions with light, how it affects color, what an excited state does to the lifetime, and so on."

Sessler's compounds also have potential implications in the field of information storage.

"We are very good as humans at manipulating electrons," said Sessler, "and although this isn't my game at the moment, it's not hard to imagine how a system that has three different electron states, and is reversible, could provide an opportunity to store information in a way we couldn't previously. Binary gives us computers. Ternary could give us even more power."

One way to follow up with customers who have just bought something is to offer them a free gift. Include a message in the email inviting them to enjoy the product. The ending of the email could tell them to act now before your number of freebies that you are providing is gone.

Create succinct subjects. Shorter subjects catch the viewers? eye, leading to a greater read rate than a longer subject. If you do not feel that you can keep your subject brief, put the most crucial information at the start of the subject.

Only send emails to those who have requested them. Emailing random people is considered spam and could get you in trouble with your ISP or web host. If you show up as a stranger in their inboxes, they will have no idea if they want to hear what you have to say. It?s likely that they?ll just delete your email, which simply wasted your precious time.

Be sure that your strategy is persistently pursued. It is crucial to be persistent, while delivering a message your readers will find beneficial. Bugging the wrong customers creates ill will and wastes resources you could be using on other customers.

It is wise to have a clean, unsubscribe link. Don?t make the link to unsubscribe hidden or difficult to find. Your customers must be made to feel that they are choosing to subscribe, and not that your emails are being forced upon them.

Include two email fields on your email opt-in forms. People often make mistakes in typing their email addresses on their first try. The most common mistake is typing .cmo as opposed to .com. If they do so, it is much more likely that their email will be correct.

It?s important that you have someone?s permission before you put them on your email list. Anyone who does not want your email will consider them spam, and your reputation could suffer. If your email provider receives enough complaints, they could even drop you for violating their spam policies.

Layout is of the utmost importance in email marketing. You may want to use images, but it is better to avoid them because of spam filters. Be sure that you put all of the information they need to know within the text portion of the message. Keep the graphics on your website, and include links to your site in your emails.

Marketing emails should contain very few graphics. A lot of email services don?t allow photos, so a photo dependent approach is not effective. As well, emails that are heavily laden with graphics are often seen as junk or spam mail by email programs, meaning your email could land in a junk folder very easily.

To get customers enthused about getting your emails, give prizes away through your newsletter. Using e-mail marketing in this way will give customers a return on their time for reading your emails and will most likely gain you referrals as well. You can grow your email list by offering a referral program.

You can use A/B testing to improve the results of your emails? subject lines. To do this, simply select an email and then send it to one half of your mailing list with one subject line, and the other half with a different subject line. You will be able to see which subject lines encourage people to open your emails and which ones you should avoid.

E-mail marketing is extremely effective; however, there are many issues that businesses encounter. One major issue is being able to collect enough emails in order to make this type of marketing worthwhile. Others are not quite sure how to design emails to send to their email list. If you apply the ideas covered in the preceding paragraphs, your company will be enabled to surmount any challenges ahead of you. This article will also ensure that your marketing via email campaign generates some nice profits.
