Local teacher instructs national webinar ? Homepage ? Daily ...

JACKSONVILLE ? A local high school educator recognized nationally for his work in helping students earn computer application certifications shared the secrets to his success via webinar Tuesday.

Chuck Silvertooth, a business technology teacher and certification coordinator at Jacksonville High, was joined by Lubbock educator Janet Flusche as they fielded questions from interested teachers ?on how (certification programs) benefit the community, with kids graduating high school already certified? in Microsoft and Adobe products, he said.

?We have a very successful program (in which graduates are prepared for college) and have readily available skills? through certification, Silvertooth said. ?We shared information about the challenges we've met and how we pulled our programs together.?

Certiport, the official test delivery solution provider for global workforce and academic markets, sponsored the event, during which Silvertooth said he logged into a laptop and shared a PowerPoint presentation with the audience, who typed in questions that were answered at the end of the session.

?It was my first time to do a webinar, and I think it went great,? he said. ?There were a lot of good questions asking, 'How did you start out?' and 'What worked best for you?' We told our stories, and explained how to set up a certification process (at a school).?

There were 22 participants across the country.

Silvertooth has taught at the high school eight years, and launched the certification program his second year there with 12 students. ?Our biggest year was with eight classes in excess of 150 kids,? he said.

Certification programs are supported by federal funding ?so that kids don't have to pay for it,? he said. ?We?re blessed to have federal funding to tap into to be able to provide this for the kids.?

Silvertooth was named the North American Teacher of the Year in July by Certiport, and is a test administrator for Microsoft and Adobe products.

Halloween will soon be upon us this year and the Ocean City Police ...

The Ocean City Police Department recommends these simple tips for a safe Halloween:

  • Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
  • Before drinking, designate a sober driver.
  • If you?re impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
  • If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don?t hesitate to contact local law enforcement.
  • And remember, Friends Don?t Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests the following:

Going trick-or-treating?

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

E

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

? ?
H

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don?t run from house to house.

Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

E

?

Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

Enter homes only if you?re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don?t stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.

Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

?

?Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests?

  • Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks. For party guests, offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.
  • Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity.
  • Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls.
  • Keep candle-lit jack o?lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.
  • Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.

Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone!

A Zynga ad platform? Way too little, way too late | PandoDaily

Zynga has laid off 100 employees and is closing its Austin and Boston offices, everyone has reported. CEO Mark Pincus had hinted at ?targeted cost reductions? to weak-performing games in a recent employee letter.

But beyond drastic cost-cutting, the company has a much deeper problem, and that is one of strategy.

Today we saw that Zynga is developing an ad platform to sell ?more lightweight experiences? to brands. Previously the company?s games have featured major brand integrations with Lady Gaga and McDonald?s. But this new platform would jam more banner ads, video pre-rolls ads, and interstitials into the games. In other words, the crappy, ineffective, interrupting, uninvited, annoying, pushy, click-driven, user-experience-ruining ads most of us in the startup world desperately want to kill.

This news got a lot less attention than the layoffs, but it may say more about the company?s fortunes. Make no mistake, this is a move of desperation, and it is happening way too late in the game.

Things look bad for Zynga now ? I don?t have to tell you about how badly the stock has performed on repeated earnings disappointments. But think back to a time, somewhere between 2008 and 2010, when Zynga was positively on fire. Advertisers wanted to be in Zynga games more desperately than they wanted to be on Facebook and Twitter. Zynga offered what is now the most desirable form of advertising there is ? a native ad built into the gaming experience. A Lady Gaga-sponsored area in CityVille called GagaVille. A Mafia Wars tie-in with The Green Hornet. A McDonald?s dairy barn, cafe, and bakery in FarmVille.

These high profile brand integrations have not been cheap. They typically start at around half a million dollars. And they have a dirty secret: A brand will never buy twice, says Chris Cunningham, CEO of native ad network Appssavvy. That?s like running the same Super Bowl ad two years in a row. Something that custom, time-consuming and expensive is difficult to repeat, a fact Zynga has learned the hard way.

But the company, distracted by its IPO, showdowns with Facebook, and a skyrocketing virtual goods business, did not build advertisements into the DNA of the company, hustling to maintain relationships with Madison Avenue. The virtual goods business was doing too well, even with Facebook taking a massive 30 percent cut, to make brand advertising a priority. Zynga forfeited the option to make brand advertising a huge part of its business during that time because the company viewed ads as competing with its core virtual goods business. Ads have remained a small portion of the company?s revenue ? 12 percent last quarter at $41 million.

Now with Zynga?s earnings in the dumps, advertising is looking like a smarter option. Brand advertising has been around for decades. The riskier virtual goods economy is still in its infancy.

Making matters worse, the company is no longer the only social game in town, and brand advertisers are not begging to get into Zynga games. Plenty of social gaming competitors have crowded with market with cheaper and even repeatable ways to buy their way into social games, thanks to a growing market with players from King Games to Playfish and PopCap. Having seen the virtual goods business fall off a cliff, many competitors have built native advertising built into their DNA from day one.

Now, Zynga?s bright idea is to go after lower margin commodity advertisements. It is launching an ad network at a time when perception of ad networks is at an all-time low. Zynga missed its chance to get in good with brands and agencies when it was hot. Now here it is, peddling the lowest hanging fruit of the Internet, banner ads. Woof.

designers and project managers draft a development plan for the project with cost and time
estimates.

PHASE 4 - INCREMENTAL DEVELOPMENT
This is the stage where the project is actually off the ground. AERL'S builds the application in
progressive phases or increments. Incremental delivery permits experimentation of complex
solutions during the course of development. This approach facilitates modifications through hands-
on exposure to the delivered increment.

PHASE 5 - INSTALLATION and TRAINING
Once the system is installed on the production servers, comprehensive training is extended to the
client's IT/ MIS personnel; not only to administer and maintain it, but also to understand the
underlying technology and development tools. The end-users are trained to use the application
effectively. Follow-up action in terms of close monitoring of the system and applications ensures
immediate response to issues

Some Additional Notes
Communication is of high profile for a successful development that is why we usually have
two project managers assigned to the project. One of them, either a member of our team or

geographic locations.
If it is necessary, qualified technical consultant can be assigned to study your business
process and your existing software. Of course, we understand all the complexity of the
development process, great variety of possible situations and requirements, individual sense
of taste and other things. We will take whatever time is necessary to meet your expectations.

Asia shares fall as economy gloom hits techs, miners

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Asian shares fell on Wednesday, led by losses in technology and materials stocks after brokerage downgrades for top chip maker Intel Corp and a warning from global miner Rio Tinto about the uncertain near-term outlook.

Global equities and the euro had fallen on Tuesday, knocked by gloomy forecasts from the International Monetary Fund, which said the world economic slowdown was worsening, and pessimism about the U.S. corporate earnings outlook.

The safe-haven dollar rose on Wednesday as the euro zone's festering debt crisis put the single currency under renewed pressure. Spanish bond yields climbed on Tuesday as Madrid kept markets guessing over whether it will request an international bailout.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 0.4 percent, with the materials <.miapjmt00pus> and tech <.miapjit00pus> sub-indexes both shedding more than 0.5 percent.

Japan's Nikkei share average <.n225> fell 1.3 percent. <.t/>

U.S. stocks <.spx> fell around 1 percent on Tuesday. Shares of Intel, the world's largest semiconductor maker, lost 2.7 percent after negative reports from at least two brokerages. <.n/>

Equity markets have broadly been rallying since hitting a nadir for the year in early June, supported by a fresh round of stimulus measures rolled out by major central banks last month to bolster fragile economies.

But caution has set in as the corporate third quarter results season gets under way, with S&P 500 earnings forecast to have fallen 2.4 percent from the year-earlier period, the first decline in three years, according to Thomson Reuters data.

"History is not on the side of those who expect the market to continue to prosper once the earnings cycle has turned," said John Higgins, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, in a note.

Reinforcing nervousness about the state of the global economy, Rio Tinto Chief Executive Tom Albanese said on Tuesday the company would step up cost cuts because of an uncertain near-term outlook that includes lower growth this year in China, the world's largest consumer of key commodities.

Copper and gold prices were steady on Wednesday but oil fell, with Brent crude losing 50 cents to $114 a barrel and U.S. crude falling around 0.6 percent to below $92.

The euro fell 0.1 percent to around $1.2865, while the dollar rose by a similar percentage against a basket of major currencies <.dxy>.

Spirit and Wine | Blog | Wine Competitions? Why are there so many?

This is rather a complicated question. They are one way to talk about your wine in a way that makes them sound,?Award winning, Best of Show, Champion of the Region or whatever other moniker you care to ascribe.
The first part of the rather leading question, is what are they?
To that, I will answer with what they are not! They are not the best way to promote your wine. Known in the trade as ?Accolades?. Gold, Platinum, Double Gold are the main stays of wine awards at competitions. Then there are point scores which only happen at very few Competitions. The California State Fair gives medals and point scores. Although, I?m not sure how 93 points equates to a Silver Medal? That?s exactly what one of the wines that received this year. If this isn?t confusing to consumers, let alone wine trade pro?s I?m not sure how to relay that to our sales people? Would I just leave it as it?s a 93 Point Wine?and leave off the bit about being a silver medal?
If you aren?t familiar with traditional Point scores from magazines such as Wine & Spirits, Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate who work from the 100 point score, generally anything 90 points and above is a great wine! Even 88 points from Antonio Gallino is nothing to sneer at. I recently tasted one such 88 point wine and in my book it was closer to 92 points. So how do experts in vino conclude that one wine is 94 points and another is a mere 87? To this, it all depends on the context. If you taste a group of wines from a known brand who is used to getting high 90 point scores then you would expect them to receive these consistently, yet for a bad weather vintage. Would these be tasted blind? I would say yes, but the problem with tasting blind at a winery that is already a known quantity, it isn?t hard for the reviewer to figure out which variety of wine they are tasting and from where. These are all tools you learn in Sommelier class. Based on color, aroma, varietal markers and rim variation you can almost nail it down to the region. So unless you are tasting wines from many regions blind, and even better, Double-Blind, you are already setup for getting good point scores at an Overachiever winery. Given this context, you have to assign a variation in scores based on qualities you like in a wine, age ability or just how well do you like it now or are you basing your opinion on how it will taste in 2-5 years? This is called Futures?and most notably done in Bordeaux. With so many variables involved it is no wonder that some wines do well and some just mediocre. In this recently lineup 98 points was the high and 88 the low. I would take the 88 if that?s the kind of quality you get for 88 points I think that many have been given very favorable points based on other factors.
Getting back to the point of my post, Why are there so many competitions??To this I will answer with a famous quote from a King who loved wine.

?One not only drinks wine, one smells it, observes it,?tastes it, sips it, and one talks about it.? ?Edward VII (1841-1910)

In the absence of a favorable Point Scores from the previously mentioned magazines, Gold medals are better than nothing. I?m not saying that reviewers and judges at wine competitions aren?t capable and as unbiased as wine writers for these magazines, I?m just saying that they are considered lesser than by wineries. This is an unfortunate and frustrating situation that needs to change.?Distributors from the?prohibition era to this day have kept control of alcohol distribution through what amounts to government/state controlled?extortion in an effort to ?Protect the public? from the selling of ??dangerous beverages?. What they are protecting is their profit line, that isn?t much different than ?Organized Wine Crime?. They decide what will be in their county or state and the consumers are held hostage to this?racketeering style of control. Wine buyers go along with this with a little insider payoffs in the form of wine or heavy discounting that benefits the retailer/restaurant or hotel. With this 1, 2 punch of marketing by will, wine magazines unwittingly are playing into the cabal?s hands and the consumers will never see anything but the same ol, same ol.

I?m longing for the day when Sommelier?s and wine buyers will take a stand and demand something different. Wines with style and character and not just the?mainstream?brands. The ?Gatekeepers? of the Wine Kingdom no longer will be the only source for good wines.?In a wine world where PR companies and certain wine writers reviews are the only opinion?s that matter, wineries need to step up and full embrace the trade; wine bloggers,?Sommelier?s?and small open minded distributors. We?would all sell more wine and have a much more balanced approach to wine reviews.

Currently, you are forced to pay the gatekeepers that will go on record to say that your wine is good, a must buy and 90 Pointer! To get to the magazine wine reviewers you need a good PR company. This can be very expensive. To go for the Gold it will cost anywhere from $50-85 per wine and require 6 sample bottles of each to be shipped to a competition. For a large winery, that ads up to $1200-1800 for an average wine competitions. There are close to 20 mainstream wine competitions in 2012 that I counted and at least 2 more were new this year. Either way you do it, it will cost you money to get the notice of the judge and jury of wine appreciation. For small,?boutique?wineries who can get the notice of the right people it can be done for much less, but it takes a lot of knowing the right people. Not what you know it?s who you know adage.

By enlarge, there are to many wine competitions that will give you a gold medal just for entering, which just demeans the value of these competitions. I may have to put this to the test in 2013 and relabel the same wine in not so nice a packaging just to prove the point. One other way to get Gold medals is make sure your winery name starts in the first part of the alphabet. Most competitions taste through their wines alphabetically. By the time you get to S and T, your palate is done! A double edged sword, where judges taste over 100 wines in a day can?t lead to anything good or accurate after wine #30.

Conclusion: I would like to see less competitions and less Gold medal winners in 2013. Telling me I won a Gold medal in the Value wine section for San Luis Obispo doesn?t really mean anything if the winery that just opened down the street got the same. If you are just having a competition to make money and drink wine with a bunch of like minded revelers it?s time for you to retire your competition. I want Authenticity and so do consumers. Hold a celebration for the love of the wine quality, region and winemakers. Nothing else should be acceptable to real wine reviewers in this day and age. Give us Vino Veritas!

OnSurg.com - Trauma Survival and Air vs Ground Transport

From The Trauma Professional?s Blog, original post date 5 months ago

Wartime experience has shown that rapid transport from the battlefield scene of injury to definitive care dramatically improves survival. This has been translated into civilian trauma care by making helicopter transport to a trauma center more widely available. But this resource is still somewhat limited, and very expensive compared to ground EMS transport. Is this expense warranted, or in other words, does it improve survival?

Dr Michael McGonigal

Many have tried to answer this question. Several of these studies did show improved survival with air transport,?but most had significant flaws that made their conclusions hard to interpret. The current issue of JAMA has published an article from MIEMSS and Johns Hopkins that tries to do it right.

The authors used the National Trauma Data Bank (1.8M records) and whittled it down to 223K by using pertinent exclusion criteria. About 25% were transported by air and 72% were taken to Level I centers (vs Level II). A sophisticated regression model was used to adjust for missing data and clustering by trauma centers.

They found that there is roughly a 1.5% survival advantage in taking patients to trauma centers by air. About 65 patients need to be transported to a Level I center, or 69 patients to a Level II center, to save a life. There are some issues with the statistics, primarily due to the nature of the NTDB data, but overall the paper is nicely done.

Bottom line: It looks like helicopter transport of seriously injured trauma patients conveys a very small survival advantage. However, this does not mean that everybody now needs to be flown in. This is not an ideal world, and not everybody is in an area that can provide such transport. Furthermore, in many areas ground EMS is still faster than air. And finally, air transport is much more expensive than the incremental survival increase may be worth. We will have to come to grips as a society to figure out what we can really afford.

gulftoday.ae | Cellphone can ruin your relationship: Research

LONDON: New research has found mobile phones can damage personal relationships merely with their presence no matter they are being used or not.

According to psychologists who conducted the experiments at Essex University, mobile phones automatically trigger thoughts about wider social networks, reducing the level of empathy and understanding in face-to-face conversations, ?Daily Mail? reported.

The two studies found if a mobile was visible during a conversation it caused people to feel less positive towards the person with whom they were talking.

The findings suggest fiddling with one's cellphone or simply leaving it in view during a romantic dinner or a meeting with a friend could be a serious social faux pas.

"In both studies we found evidence mobiles can have negative effects on closeness, connection, and conversation quality," said lead researcher Andrew Przybylski.

The studies were the first designed to check the effects of a mobile phone being present on face-to-face communication.

49ers make statement with rout

Chiefs Packers FootballAP

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel may not be very popular in the stands, but he still has support in the locker room.

Chiefs right tackle Eric Winston took fans to task for cheering when Cassel left the game with a head injury.

The veteran blocker called a group of reporters over, and said the following words, via Arrowhead Pride:

?We are athletes, OK? We are athletes. We are not gladiators. This is not the Roman Coliseum. People pay their hard-earned money when they come in here and I believe they can boo, they can cheer and they can do whatever they want, I believe that. We are lucky to play this game. People, it?s hard to economic times, and they still pay the money to do this.

?But when somebody gets hurt, there are long lasting ramifications to the game we play, long lasting ramifications to the game we play. I?ve already kinda come to the understanding that I won?t live as long because I play this game and that?s OK, that?s a choice I?ve made and a choice all of us have made.

?But when you cheer, when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don?t care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel ? it?s sickening. It?s 100 percent sickening. I?ve been in some rough times on some rough teams, I?ve never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than in that moment right there.

?I get emotional about it because these guys, they work their butts off. Matt Cassel hasn?t done anything to you people, hasn?t done anything to you people. Hasn?t done anything to the media writers that kill him, hasn?t done anything wrong to the people that come out here and cheer him. Hey, if he?s not the best quarterback then he?s not the best quarterback and that?s OK. But he?s a person. And he got knocked out in a game and we have 70,000 people cheering that he got knocked out?

?Boo him all you want. Boo me all you want. Throw me under the bus. Tell me I?m doing a bad job. Say I gotta protect him more. Do whatever you want. Say whatever you want. But if you are one of those people, one of those people that were out there cheering or even smiled when he got knocked out, I just want to let you know, and I want everybody to know that I think it?s sickening and disgusting. We are not gladiators and this is not the Roman Coliseum. This is a game.

?I?ll sit here and I?ll answer all your questions for the next 30 minutes if you want to ask them and I?ll take all the responsibility I can take because I deserve it but don?t blame a guy, and don?t cheer for a guy who has done everything in his power to play as good as he can for the fans.

?It?s sickening. And I was embarrassed. I want every single one of you people to put this on your station and in your newspapers because I want every fan to know that. This is a game that?s going to cost us a lot down the road. That?s OK. We picked it, we deserve it and I don?t want your pity. But we have a lot of problems as a society if people think that?s OK.

?I?ll get off my soap box and you guys can ask any football question you want.?

No, Eric, that pretty much covers it.

The Chiefs have played poorly. Frankly, they are a disaster. Cassel leads the parade.

But for too many fans, their passion for the team leads them to forget that the laundry they?re cheering for has a human being inside it.

Iran scorns Israeli air defenses, complains of cyber attack

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran derided Israel's air defenses as feeble on Monday, citing a drone incursion into its arch-foe's airspace, but did not say it had sent the aircraft shot down by the Israelis at the weekend.

It also accused Israel and others of masterminding what it said was a cyber attack on communication networks on Iranian offshore oil and gas platforms in the past few weeks.

With tension high over Iran's disputed nuclear program and Israeli threats to attack it, the remarks by Iranian officials pointed to possible aspects of a shadow war waged by the two adversaries and perhaps by Israel's Western allies, whose sanctions have battered the Iranian economy and currency.

Jamaluddin Aberoumand, deputy coordinator for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the drone intrusion showed that Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile defense system "does not work and lacks the necessary capacity", Fars news agency reported.

The Israeli air force shot down a drone on Saturday after it crossed into southern Israel, the military said, but it remained unclear where the aircraft had come from.

Iron Dome is designed to shoot down short-range guerrilla rockets, not slow-flying planes such as drones.

The Israeli military said the drone was first spotted above the Mediterranean near the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip to the west of Israel and shot down by a fighter plane over Israeli territory.

Israeli parliament member and former military spokesman Miri Regev described it as "Iranian drone launched by Hezbollah", the Lebanese Shi'ite group that fought a war with Israel in 2006.

Israeli defense officials have not confirmed this. Hezbollah has sent a drone into Israeli airspace at least once previously.

Aberoumand attributed claims the drone was made by Iran to a "psychological operation" by Israel, but did not confirm or deny them. "The Zionist regime (Israel) has many enemies," he added.

Israel has threatened to bomb Iran's nuclear sites if diplomatic efforts fail to stop the nuclear work it believes is aimed at getting weapons capability, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran has responded with threats to attack U.S. military bases in the region and retaliate against Israel if attacked.

CYBER ATTACK

Mohammad Reza Golshani, head of information technology for the Iranian Offshore Oil Company, told Iran's Mehr news agency Iranian experts had been able to repel the cyber attack on the information networks on offshore oil and gas platforms.

"This attack was planned by the regime occupying Jerusalem (Israel) and a few other countries," Golshani said. Telephone communications on the platforms were now normal.

In an unrelated blow to Iran's energy exports, the gas flow on a pipeline carrying Iranian natural gas to Turkey was halted on Monday by an explosion in eastern Turkey, where Kurdish militants have claimed repeated pipeline attacks in the past.

Iran, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, has tightened cyber security since 2010 when its uranium enrichment centrifuges were hit by the Stuxnet computer worm, which it blames on Israel or the United States. Neither has acknowledged planting the worm.

Iran has reported several computer attacks in recent months and a Revolutionary Guard commander said last month the country would defend itself in case of a "cyber war".

Tehran is seeking to developing a national Internet system, which it says would improve cyber security. But many Iranians say the plan is the latest way to control their access to the Web, which is already highly censored.

Iran's hardline clerical leaders are determined to prevent any new wave of unrest after the bloody turmoil that followed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009.

But street protests erupted last week over the plunging value of the rial, which lost a third of its dollar value in 10 days as Western sanctions on Iran's oil and banking sectors cut the country's ability to earn hard currency from oil exports.

Very little trading occurred on the open market on Monday, with the government-promoted rate of 28,500 rials to the dollar attracting little interest among those with dollars to sell.

The authorities have pressed dealers to trade dollars at certain rates and have arrested money changers accused of speculating. Others, unwilling to use state-set rates and afraid to trade at black market rates, are retaining their dollars.

Ahmadinejad and his administration are bearing the brunt of the blame for the rial's fall. Parliament voted on Sunday to consider halting further reform of Iran's food and fuel subsidies, a centrepiece of the president's economic platform.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has stayed above the fray, saying only that the Islamic Republic - which has also been disconcerted by the revolt convulsing Syria, its closest Arab ally - will not bow to outside pressure.

Heat-conducting composites for seawater desalination

ScienceDaily (Oct. 4, 2012) ? Drinking water is a scarce commodity ? a fact no longer limited to the desert regions of the world. During the hot summer months, drinking water is a valuable commodity in Mediterranean countries such as Spain and Portugal, too. As a result, industrial plants that can desalinate seawater and convert it to drinking water are on the rise. Here?s how the principle of desalination works: seawater is sprayed on pipes heated by pumping hot gas or hot water through them. Pure water evaporates from the seawater, leaving a salty sludge behind.

This process subjects the material and its properties to a diverse array of demands: the material from which the pipes are made must conduct heat and be particularly robust in resisting corrosion and the formation of deposits ? and these properties must be durable over a long period of time. And for the water to evaporate properly, the piping must also be easily coated with seawater. This is why manufacturers to date have used only titanium and high-alloy forms of steel. Yet these materials are very costly. The demand for titanium is also constantly on the rise ? as a result of the increase in lightweight construction, the aviation industry is also competing for this material. The results are delivery delays and further increases in price.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM in Bremen are now developing an alternative to the titanium tubes: pipelines made of polymer composites. The special thing about this method: the polymer composites are a plastic, and yet they conduct heat. Another benefit: they can be produced in continuous lengths and are correspondingly more economical than their metal counterparts. But what did researchers do to make a polymer heat-conducting? ?We introduced metal particles into the material - or more precisely, we add up to 50 percent copper microfibers by volume. This does not change the processing properties of the composite, and it can still be processed as any other polymer would,? notes Arne Haberkorn, a scientist at IFAM.

The researchers have already developed the material itself; now they want to optimize its thermal conductivity. To accomplish this, they are installing the piping in a pilot seawater-desalination plant: here, they are testing its thermal conductivity, checking to see how much of a microorganism-based coating forms on the pipes, and how heavily the material corrodes in its salty surroundings. They then optimize the composite properties based on the results. The researchers have set the evaporation process to run at a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius ? so there is hot gas heated to 70 degrees pumped through the pipelines. This offers several advantages: fewer deposits congregate on the pipes, the material doesn?t corrode as quickly, and the pressure differential between the inside and outside of the piping is not as dramatic.

The usages for the material are not confined to seawater desalination, either. ?We developed the pipes for desalination plants because they place the highest demands on the material. Designed with these constraints in mind, it will be no problem using it in the food or pharmaceuticals industries,? Haberkorn points out. Researchers will present this heat-conducting plastic at the Composites trade fair, October 9-11, 2012, in D?sseldorf.

Google LG Nexus Phone - Business Insider

Details have emerged today about one of Google's upcoming Nexus phones.

Paul O'Brief of MoDaCO?has discovered that LG will make a Nexus smartphone, and it should launch in November.

The LG Nexus boasts some impressive specs, including a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 1280x768 True-HD IPS display, and an 8 megapixel camera.

O'Brien also revealed that the LG Nexus phone will have wireless charging, similar to the charging system in Nokia's Lumia 920 Windows Phone.?The LG Nexus phone is also rumored to sport a non-removable battery, no microSD slot, and only 8 GB or 16 GB of flash memory.

There is wide speculation that Google is set to release several other Nexus devices this fall, leading up to the holiday season. So far Sony, Samsung, and HTC are expected to join LG in making a Nexus phone.

The Nexus line is unique because?the phones run a clean version of?Android, meaning there aren't any software modifications from the manufacturers.

Oil slips after posting biggest gain in 2 months

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices retreated a day after posting big gains as traders turned their attention to the release later Friday of a monthly U.S. jobs report.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was down 33 cents to $91.38 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday, tensions between Syria and Turkey gave oil prices their biggest jump in two months. Oil settled at $91.71 per barrel, up by $3.57, or 4 percent in New York.

The price of oil rose after Turkey's military fired on targets in Syria for the second day. The Middle East and North Africa account for about a third of global oil production. Any tension in the region makes traders nervous about a disruption to supplies.

Oil also got a boost from a falling dollar, which tends to influence investors to buy commodities like oil and gold.

The U.S. Labor Department will later Friday release September employment data ? a key indicator for growth in the world's largest economy. The widely anticipated report has taken on added importance in the heat of the U.S. presidential race.

"As far as today goes, all eyes will be on the U.S. jobs report," said oil analyst Stephen Schork in an email commentary.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, was down 54 cents to $112.04.

Among other energy futures traded in New York:

? Natural gas rose 1.6 cents to $3.422 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 1.3 cents to $3.176 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1.4 cents to $2.929 per gallon.

China reacts with surveillance ships to Japan's purchase of disputed islands

Chinese surveillance ships briefly entered waters near disputed islands in the East China Sea that fuel nationalist passions on both sides. Will Beijing ultimately accept Japan's reasoning for the move?

The civilian vessels were engaged in ?the normal performance of their duty,? Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters. The ships withdrew soon after being ordered to leave the area by Japanese coast guards, Japan?s Kyodo news agency reported.

The sovereignty dispute has flared up again since Tuesday, when the Japanese government purchased three of the five contested islands from the Japanese family that had owned them. The uninhabited islands are known as the Diaoyu in China and as the Senkaku in Japan.

Beijing clearly had to react, if only because popular sentiment is running high on the issue in China; protestors have staged demonstrations in a number of cities, Japanese citizens have been assaulted on the streets of Shanghai, tempers are flaring in Internet posts and nationalism is rampant.

Aside from that, the islands could also be valuable; ownership of them gives rights over rich fishing grounds and a claim to potentially huge oil reserves under the nearby seabed.

Senior Chinese officials have limited themselves, however, to strong words and saber rattling. Today?s edition of the ?People?s Daily,? the ruling Communist party?s official organ, carried a full page article detailing China?s recent military modernization program, for example.

On Thursday, in a thinly veiled hint at retaliatory economic steps, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei told a news briefing that "with Japan's so-called purchase of the islands, it will be hard to avoid negative consequences for Sino-Japanese economic and trade ties."

Behind the bluster, though, it might well be that Beijing has decided privately to accept the Japanese government?s explanation that it bought the islands to prevent further trouble.

Shintaro Ishihara, the stridently nationalist governor of Tokyo, had announced his own plan for the Tokyo municipality to buy the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands. Had he done so he could have caused untold mischief, provoking the Chinese at will by starting to build, or even to settle people.

Still, the sight of a Japanese citizen selling the islands to the Japanese government, regardless of China?s insistence that they are not anybody else?s to sell, has been painful here.

The authorities have salved their national pride with gestures. Last Tuesday, China began issuing weather forecasts for the islands and their surrounding waters, after publishing baseline coordinates setting out the Chinese view of which bits of rock and water belong to Beijing.

Eventually, tensions will doubtless fade, China and Japan will quietly acknowledge that they can never resolve the issue of sovereignty, and both sides will end up doing some sort of resource-sharing deal, just as they have elsewhere in the East China Sea. But that might take a while.?
